Essays

Hi, general question, do the essays (either common app one or supplemental one) need/should reference yale, as in …“blah blah blah, this is why I think Yale is good for me (although not stated stupidly like that” and in fact, does it have to mention college at all, because none of mine do, they are more about me in gneral and what I do.

also, do you really need to talk about overcoming adversity, because i talk about a person in my common app one, but I don’t think its cliche, and my supplemental one is basically a free-form essay about the way I see things around me.

any help would help, im doing EA./

thanks.

No need to reference Yale. The question isn’t posed that way. (Of course there’s the “Why Yale” bit – but that’s obvious). General essays are fine.

Have a read at this article I found informative:
[U.Va</a>. Office of Admission Essays](http://www.virginia.edu/undergradadmission/writingtheessay.html)

Note the author’s contention about “abstractions and unsupported generalizations” – maybe check your 2nd “observations” essay against this standard?

Good luck to you
