essentials

OK, what are the bare minimum essentials that you will bring with you in Sept.?
And what are the luxuries?

Definitely a laptop.

I know from my sisters’ experiences that is better to underpack, because people bring all sorts of things (like TVs), that they don’t really need or never use.

S underpacked, and any additional items needed we purchased in Chicago. One can also send packages to the dorm (at least some of them) prior to move-in day and they are there waiting for you. We did this since we were flying into Chicago. It worked out really well.

I was pretty well packed since we were driving so I didnt have to buy things right away like most other people (my suitemates and I also figured out we were sharing since it makes more sense for someone who lives close to bring a fridge etc.)

You probobly wont need most of your stuff during the first week so if you buy it later or have it shipped, it doesnt matter that much. Winter clothes are something that can get shipped to you around november.

i really don’t plan on bringing any luxuries other than my laptop… seeing as it is my music/movie-watching/entertainment-of-all-sorts/communications HQ. i may or may not be getting a new cellphone with a real plan on it… more likely than not, yes, only so i can’t have any excuse for not talking to my parents for months at a time. i actually like my soda room-temperature [thanks to living in europe over the summer], so a fridge isn’t all that necessary.

oh. i guess i am bringing all of my instruments, though. at least we have a van to drive down. :}

Essentials for me would be my supreme movie collection and TV with DVD player, random CDs, last four HP books for comfort reading during the first week of being in strange city with new people and no mom or friends to calm me. And also, emergency movie money: If all else fails, run to nearest movie theatre to sit in dark cinema for two hours. I rely on the movies and HP for escapism. Oh, new tennis racket for exercise. And my computer of course.

Records (to hang on wall so I look cool)
posters (see above)

Question: I am going to live at shoreland (hopefully) and I know that some of the rooms already have a fridge. Is there anyway I can find out if my room is one of those?

My luxuries are various “beauty” appliances, i.e. hair dryer, straightener, curling iron; and of course my laptop.

I tend to overpack, though, so I’m sure I will end up bringing many more luxuries.

An alarm clock!

I already bought a poster from Goblet of Fire to bring, and I may bring an extra King Kong one, even though the movie didn’t jazz me as much as LotR. I plan to get a few more before I come. And I’m going to England this summer so I’ll be bringing a few little treasures with me I hope. And I want to get a few actual pictures. Although, I might just have the ones I take while in England framed. But a Van Gogh Starrry Night is essential.

posters galore. books aplenty. when i find out who my roommates are, then we’ll talk about bringing tvs and fridges and stuff. curling iron, no blow dryer for me. i’ll probably overpack my clothes though. but i live in chicago, so i can just drop by my house if i need anything special.
