Establishing Residency as an OOS possible through City Year?

<p>A bit of background - I recently put down my deposit at my state flagship and am deferring a year to (hopefully) do City Year in CA.</p>

<p>I am by no means doing City Year as a means to gain residency, I genuinely believe CY’s message is inspirational and amazing, and I cannot wait to be a part of it. That being said, I am not exactly thrilled with where I will be enrolling a year from now - because of financial reasons, the only school I could afford was my super-safety, and I would like to maybe re-apply to some schools next year (UCLA included).</p>

<p>According to the UCLA registrar’s office (UCLA Registrar’s Office: Residence Classification for Tuition Purposes FAQ)…
“To establish residence the student must be physically present in California for more than one year and must have come here with the intent to make California his or her home. Physical presence California solely for educational purposes does not constitute the establishment of California residence, regardless of the length of stay.”</p>

<p>City Year lasts 10 months - would I officially be able to declare residency if I do 2 years at City Year (1 year as a regular corps member and 1 as a senior corps member), assuming I remain financially independent in the summer between the two service terms?</p>

<p>I’m not sure exactly how CY works (do you get a stipend and housing?), but to establish residency (for UC tuition purposes) you need to be financially independent throughout the two years you live in CA and your parents need to stop claiming you on their taxes as a dependent. You should also show intent of making CA your permanent home, so get a CA driver’s license, register to vote in CA, and pay CA income tax if you get a job.</p>
