So there’s the estimated cost but under it it says “fees” which sums up to about 2k.
What fee is it? Is it like the lab equipment, building, library etc.?
That’s pretty darn high. I paid about 50 dollars as fees per semester here at NVCC. I did not take that into calculation and now I have to take out unsubsidized loan which is very upsetting.
Would be great if anybody could clarify, thanks.
It’s best to go right to the source with these questions. SFS’s contact info is at the bottom of every page on their website. They do not have anyone posting on College Confidential who can explain your tuition bill.
The resources available to you at UVA will be quite robust compared to what you had at your community college.
UVa’s fees are similar to many universities, except UVa charges more for the varsity sports programs than most other colleges. The fees include: student health, the counseling service, the bus system (you also get free rides on city buses I believe), the sports programs (you get free admission to sports events on grounds, vs. many other universities charge students for admission to football and basketball, etc), the Newcomb Hall student union building, the huge modern Aquatics Center and other gyms, intramural programs, student activities and clubs, etc.
The fees are actually much higher for out of state students, because they are supposed to pay a higher cost for capital costs, such as for Newcomb Hall, etc.

$657 of the fees per year per student pay for the deficit in revenues vs. costs for UVa varsity sports, as of 2014.
Yes, I confirmed that UVa students can ride the city buses for free. I assume some of the fees are going to pay for that benefit.

Thank you!! I’m really hoping that it includes health insurance.
@Charliesch Just finished reading that article. Makes me really sad. Not something I’ll get from SFS. Thanks for the info.
No the required fee does not include regular health insurance. It covers some routine basic services from Student Health and some mental health counseling visits if needed, but does not replace insurance and does not cover hospitalization expenses, etc. When my son had some sports injuries at UVa, the initial visit at student health was free, but the services inside the UVa hospital were all charged onto his health insurance. Most health insurance has substantial deductibles and copays. If you are not eligible for health insurance from other sources, I would go onto the healthcare.org website and see if you are eligible for subsidies. There are specified sign up periods, unless you meet their definition of having a change of circumstances. I don’t know the status of Obamacare in Va.- the previous governor I believe had blocked some of the benefits.
