No the required fee does not include regular health insurance. It covers some routine basic services from Student Health and some mental health counseling visits if needed, but does not replace insurance and does not cover hospitalization expenses, etc. When my son had some sports injuries at UVa, the initial visit at student health was free, but the services inside the UVa hospital were all charged onto his health insurance. Most health insurance has substantial deductibles and copays. If you are not eligible for health insurance from other sources, I would go onto the healthcare.org website and see if you are eligible for subsidies. There are specified sign up periods, unless you meet their definition of having a change of circumstances. I don’t know the status of Obamacare in Va.- the previous governor I believe had blocked some of the benefits.
