Estimating date of purchase and original cost for insurance claim

Two lovely upholstered Queen Anne syle chairs in excellent condition considering that my mother bought them maybe 20 years ago. One smashed a bit by the movers. Claim form asks for date of purchase, original cost, and new replacement cost. Model still manufactured so I have a good estimate of replacement cost, but purchase records don’t show in the probably-new-since-she-bought-them computer system of the store where she is most likely to have made that purchase.

Any advice on figuring out something to put on the moving company’s claim form?

Does your deal with the movers call for replacement cost or original cost? If replacement cost, original cost doesn’t matter. If it does matter, call the company and ask what the list price was twenty years ago.

Not sure whether it is covered for replacement or original cost or just for repair. The paperwork asks for both the original cost and a new replacement cost. My sisters think I should just record it as a gift (one option on the paperwork) and leave it at that. My photo albums are still packed, so I can’t even guesstimate the year.

I have heard of some insurance companies paying for a new replacement if you actually replace the loss item, but only paying for depreciated value if you do not replace it.

I would replace it if it can’t be repaired. I really do like the chair.
