Ethnicity in Admissions

Is Iranian/Persian a unique ethnicity in admissions ?

No. Considered white for admissions purposes at most schools.

Is it unique? Yes, but not for college admissions in the fact that there are no institutional imperatives to admit Persians. It’s your story so that’s fine. But expect no boost from it

I understand not for solely for the fact of being Persian would it be beneficial, but for an essay could it be a good topic ?

What are you suggesting the essay would be about? The fact that you’re Persian? You need to narrow it down from there if it’s going to be any good.

There are already Iranians and Persians who have applied and have been accepted to college. So by definition, no, it being Iranian or Persian is not unique in the college application process.

Anything can be a good essay topic as long as it tells your story.

@CaliCash That’s poor logic because if there is a minority percentage of a certain group then it can still be unique, even if it is not the first. However, I agree being Iranian isn’t that unique. I am just asking if it would be more unique then being pure European white. Anyway, being a certain ethnicity or race can’t guarantee anyone admissions, only to slightly aid.

Unless there is some interesting story or you are taking a unique angle, I would not write about your ethnicity for your college essay.

@dnstudent26 Unique: being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else. There cannot be more of one thing and have it be unique. Something cannot be more or less unique by definition. I had a professor correct me on that.

I knew quite a few Iranian/Persian students. It’s not unusual. Focusing on it won’t help you.
