Ethnicity

If I am a 16th Native American can I put that as my ethnicity?

Do you ordinarily identify as Native American? Are you formally affiliated with a tribe (i.e., do you have documentation)? If I am right in speculating that the answer to both of those is “No,” you probably should not select that on the Common App.

you are correct

I believe the rule for Native American is 1/8th, which is not a lot, but because of slaughter and oppression, a lot have died off. Anyway, as the above poster stated, it would only be your ethnicity if you identify with it, not just if it’s beneficial for college. Now, while you can’t use it for your application, I do encourage you to look into that part of your ancestry (and, indeed, all parts of it). History can be very interesting.
