Etsy - hints for selling?

Does anyone have an Etsy shop? I’ve come across a process to make things that I’m crazy about and plan to open a shop soon. (Alos considering getting a booth at a few local craft shows this spring & summer, but need to build more inventory).

My college roommate has one and has given me some great ideas, but wanted to see if anyone on CC has sold handmade things on etsy and, if so, has any suggestions. (I’m also open to feedback from items you have purchased and what the seller did well or could have improved upon).

I’ve purchased several things from Etsy. Customer service has almost always been the outstanding point that brings me back:

  • good communication from seller - about everything from acknowledging order, to telling me when it’s shipped to providing tracking, etc.
  • packaging - items have been wrapped with care and often wrapped in some adorable way (jewelry, ornaments, etc.)
  • quick question answering - if I have asked questions I have gotten speedy quick answers!
  • great pictures online - very helpful!
  • business card included with order - great for reference back if I like the product.

I’m both a buyer and seller on Etsy. Before you open your shop, google "Etsy Sales Advice’ and read everything you can. This article was a big help to me.

No matter how hard you try, your first efforts at posting items may not be totally successful. It takes time to develop effective marketing strategies and excellent photos/descriptions of your items. But it is great fun and the Etsy community is amazing. Best wishes on your future shop!

Pictures are a huge deal on Etsy, really work to find a well-lit area and try different things to get great pictures before you start listing. There are lots of tips for that online as well.
