ETW Studio

Can any current students help me understand experiences with ETW as a studio placement? What type of student is placed there? Does it provide a solid foundation for a profession in theatre and film? I see a lot of students who want to transfer in for advanced training but I’m more concerned/looking for info on the primary studio placement and experiences.

I am not a current student. I’m the mom of a student just placed in Meisner.

However, we have a friend who graduated from Tisch in 2014. He was in New Studio and was talking to my D about her choices and he said: “I wish I had been placed in ETW.” He felt they received incredible training, became very skilled actors and had the most fun.

My D is in Adler, so I am also speaking with 2nd hand knowledge. But ETW kids get a ton of time with improvisation (which would make them very flexible) and student devised work- which I think is vital for performers today. That’s one of the reasons it is so popular for advanced training- kids recognize that you can’t wait for projects to come to you

I don’t know if this will be helpful, but my daughter was in ETW for advanced studio for her final three semesters at Tisch (after five semesters in CAP21 studio, the then MT studio). She LOVED ETW!!! It is a very popular studio and many try to get into it for advanced studio once they learn more about it. My D’s fiancé was in ETW all four years and also loved it. I recall at the time my D switched into ETW studio, she remarked that she was seeing how great the actors were from that studio.

Yes, it does provide a strong acting foundation. It also is strong in physical acting. The final two years in ETW, they let you pick what courses you want to take in studio, which is not quite the same as the lock stepped prescribed courses in some studios, like my D had in her MT studio. There are dance and song types classes too. A feature in senior year is the option to do what is referred to as Independent Projects. That was a draw to my D as she wanted to try to create her own original musical before graduating, and she did. That project/production led to soooo much more for her that we could never have predicted. I will say that many students in ETW are very good at creating original work, not just performing. This has served my D and her fiancé and many friends who did ETW well. One friend who started in Adler but then switched to ETW, recently starred in a made for TV movie. Another friend who started in CAP21 (MT studio) with my D and later did ETW, created and is starring in her own TV show right now. Others have been on Broadway. Some have created new works being produced in various theaters. My D’s fiancé, an ETW graduate, is involved in sketch comedy. My D is involved as a musical theater performer, but also creates original works. Some peers from ETW started theater companies. My observation is that many of the Tisch students really didn’t know much about ETW before starting at Tisch but once at Tisch, and they learn about it, many want to be in that studio!! As I said, my kid loved it, but was first drawn by the talents of the kids she observed who were training in that studio.
