My three guys are heading off in a month… They’ll land in Frankfurt. Based on the strength of the dollar, and the “we’ve never been there” they’ve decided to stay in central/eastern Europe. Prague is a certainty, Berlin a near certainty, and they are leaning toward Budapest.

I’ve given them a week or so to settle on the countries so I can buy Eurail passes for the countries/days of travel.

They have Let’s Go: Western Europe (bought when they thought that was where they were going) and now Let’s Go: Eastern Europe (bought when they took a good look at the Euro).

I’m trying to remember MY pre-OCD “Let’s Go” days, and just let them GO. I know it will be the experience of a lifetime. They have 9 days. (sigh - I know - not long enough, but schedules were already interfering, which is why we are ponying up so they can do this…)

Any words of advice, ideas, suggestions, tips, valium welcome.

Lucky kids. Three boys oughta be resourceful enough to get themselves into a moderate amount of adventures. Maybe they can hookup with some real fun :)

Man, I know they are lucky. It’s KILLING me that they’re going, and I’m NOT!!!

I think THEY even are starting to get that they are lucky. (we just told them today that we were popping for the Eurail passes… they had thought they just had the plane tickets and were on their own altogether, and they are three BROKE kids.)

I’ve hoped for a while that they could do something like this, and I’m excited, and not surprised, that they are choosing to go where mom hasn’t been - blazing their own trail. I don’t know the currency, or ANYTHING, and despite having lived abroad myself, I have to admit that when I read that RABIES VACCINATIONS are recommended for parts of eastern Europe, for a minute I morphed from a traveler to a MOM.

I half wish I could be a bug on the wall for SOME (certainly not ALL) of the adventures…

They’ll take lots of pictures, and have lots of stories to tell, and I’m sure they’ll have some that they WON’T tell, but will be part of the brother lore for the rest of their lives… And that’s why our debt is not going down for ANOTHER few months this year. Choices, choices…

They will probably have a GREAT time and learn A LOT. My son did something similar, and a small warning…three of the six kids had their backpacks lost by the airline. They eventually turned up I’m happy to report but it’s good to keep your essentials in a small carry on bag.
