<p>I’m stunned at how much the cost of a semester studying abroad in Europe has increased over the past 7 or 8 years – a much steeper increase than even college costs in the U.S. Any predictions/projections of what the heightened economic turmoil in Europe will do to American students’ study abroad options and costs over there?</p>
<p>If you schedule the study abroad through your US school, you ought to pay your US school their fees, get any usual merit or need based aid and they work it out with the EU school based on exchanging students, so the increased costs are travel, side trips and some living expenses</p>
<p>That’s the way it was at our state university seven or eight years ago when a relative spent a semester studying abroad. Now it’s about $9,000 a semester more, not counting the extra $$ for airfare and travel on breaks/weekends. And this is a state U that has seen huge increases in tuition and housing costs over the past 7 to 8 years.</p>
<p>The tuition/room and board for both of my sons to study abroad was several thousand $$ less than what we paid for a semester at their “home” schools. Maybe some programs charge a lot more, but that was not our experience. The airfare increased significantly from when my older S went abroad (spring 2008) to when younger S did (fall 2010).</p>
