Ever Googled Yourself?

And what did you find?

In addition to being who/what I am in real life I also found someone of the opposite sex, with my name, that is an attorney in another state. My name is pretty gender specific.

Lots of stuff that I’ve written for publication, most of which was originally in print. I’m glad it’s also online.

Everything that I find when I Google myself actually pertains to me – probably because of my name (which isn’t really Marian). I married a guy from a different ethnic background than my own, and I use my married name for everything. So I have a first name characteristic of one ethnicity and a last name characteristic of another. I doubt there’s anybody else in the world with the same name as me.

On the other hand, if I Google my son and daughter, both of whom have neutral non-ethnic first names, I see mostly listings pertaining to other people who have the same names that they do. My daughter, for example, has the exact same name as a documentary filmmaker. You have to go through pages and pages of listings pertaining to this woman before finding anything that actually pertains to my daughter.

There are something like 400 references for me, and all of them (except one) are really me. That’s because in my early career I was an editor, and every book I ever worked on is listed on-line – often the same books in different libraries. Very strange.

Unfortunately or fortunately have a “John Smith” type of name. So nothing shows up. Back in the old days (10 years ago) it was fun to search for people on Yahoo when there was less content. Remember logging into AOL with the annoying sounds and the lightning bolt. I think I started on AOL in 1995 and stayed for about 5 years until I got DSL. Does anybody still use AOL. They use to have all those wierd user groups where people would chat. Do not know if that stuff still exists.

I’ve noticed lately that if you google ANYONE, a database with their high school or even elementary school comes up!!! One of my siblings was born in the early 50s and there’s a database with my siblings elementary school classmates!!! That is creepy!!!

I just regoogled myself…

and found a newspaper article about our educational choices - from 8 years ago.

Actually, I still stand by what I said, and what we chose for our kids. For now…
:-)

I have googled my CC screen name and been led to one of my comments here!

Googling yourself is also called “ego-surfing” :-). It helps to put double quotes around your name, so you don’t get hits from pages where the two parts of your name appear separately.

I check in on what comes up for me every year or so. Almost everything is from my earlier work, some of it a very long time ago, so it’s kind of like a scrapbook to see those things pop up.

I sometimes do. I find stuff about other people with the same name (nothing alarming or unusual), but if I add my field of work to the search terms, I get the same results as Marian’s - publications and posters. If I google the kids, I mostly find their old meet results.

When I Google myself, some articles I’ve written and organizations I’ve been part of come up. Also my Facebook account and a youth group I use to belong to.

Nothing on me…my kids have more hits than me.

Snowball, you’re right. I just googled my screen name here and one of my threads came up.

The only thing I get is a 13-year-old actress and someone who lives in near where my dad is currently taking classes at in Oklahoma.

At one point in time, there used to be a journalist with my name who had appeared on the first page of the search… but now she’s not there anymore!

If you google just my name I don’t come up until page 2 with some art work from my website and also for a membership in a local art association. If you google my name first plus “architect” my professional website comes up in the first two positions, and in the third a really dopey New York Times article that was mostly about my boss at the time, but also (sort of) quoted me. It was more a case of putting words in my mouth as I recall. (That article was from 1993!)

Interestingly there seems to be another mathmom or two out there.

Yes, I’ve Googled myself, and in addition to various things about me, I also learned that my name is the real name of a celebrity, who normally goes by a different name.

Seems like I am a biologist, an artist, a lawyer, a Certified International Investment Analyst, and I am working in the film industry. I never realized I am that accomplished  I also personally know another person with my name who is exactly one year younger than me. Creepy…

Just tried it with me and all my sibs and H’s family. No hits. Yes we were all born and educated in the US from K through college. YOu must have gone to a school system where the data was somehow made public (I was going to say “compromised” or “used” but couldn’t come up with a neutral term… but then is there a neutral term for having someone’s elementary enrollment made public? Creepy!)

I share a name with a second-level celebrity so you have to go pretty deep to find my.

The first time I Web-searched my name was probably 10 years ago on Alta Vista. It turns out that at the time I shared my name with a gay porn actor.

sigh

Mostly my own stuff came up when I googled myself, although I found a little article about a nurse with my name in the middle of the second page. She sounds like a nice person. Maybe we’re related (although I did take my husband’s name, so I mean, maybe she’s from some distant branch of hubby’s family…)

And I found a review that I did of our trip to Disney World in 2000. I was apparently perfectly willing to post my name on the internet then…
