I couldn’t sleep last night and while flipping through the channels I saw an infomercial for something called the Shark Steam Mop. It looked great, but it was a commercial designed to sell a product. Could it be as good as advertised?

I was wondering if CC folks out there might share their experiences (both positive and negative) with products purchased from an infomercial. So many of them look great, but . . . Thanks!

I bought OxyClean when it was available in stores. It’s fantastic.

My neighbor bought that Bullet chopper/processor machine. Her kids use it every day to make smoothies & omlettes & other dishes. I don’t have the patience to sit through more than 30 seconds of an infomercial, so I’m not up on them at all. I’ve seen stores in the mall called “As Seen on TV” where many of the products are available. Mayber you can find it there & have a good look before buying.

Oh golly, years ago I bought a pasta maker. It did what it was supposed to do, and I made pasta for a few months, but after a few years of doing nothing but gathering dust I threw it away.

Stickershock, I tried to sue the makers of the Bullet chopper a few years back for name infringement, but I still haven’t seen a dime of that money. :)

However, I can’t wait to start losing more hair on top so I can get that amazing hair in a can product. Just what I always wanted: to put furry graffiti on top of my noggin!

My husband has bought quite a few. Most were garbage. Don’t ever buy that cheap version of a room to room vacuum. Anything that chops, slices and dices isn’t worth much. Oxy clean works great and is still available at Costco. I just bought a Pedegg and love it.

When our S was an infant and would wake up frequently for feedings I watched way too many infomercials. The Jane Fonda treadmill finally got to me. I was “weak” from a lack of sleep and carrying extra baby weight. It worked fine, but unfortunately the one thing it could not do was make me use it regularly. ;)

I have never bought off the TV. I did try Oxyclean once I saw it at Costco. We also recently bought a Bullet after my spouse came into contact with someone related to the company. It works great for making salad dressing and smoothies. The kids can work it themselves without all the mess of the regular blender.
My youngest D is always calling me into see some commercial of something she thinks we need. The latest was yesterday. It is a carpet like product that you cut and lay in your flower beds. Water and magically in weeks you have a beautiful border of flowers. I at least know enough about gardening that seeds don’t become blooming plants in weeks.

StickerShock makes a valid point: some stores (not just “As Seen On TV”) do offer TV-sold items. I know for a fact that Kohl’s sells Shark steam mops (or maybe just Shark Swiffer-clones; I forget), Pedeggs, and Mighty Putty.

Once I bought a thing that was supposed to make painting walls easier. It really made things more complicated and was a waste of money. I never watched another info-mercial. They are too enticing.

I am DYING to try this shamwow product; the infomercial is like a SNL skit, but it looks amazing…I have never laughed so hard in my life; this guy is nuts…

I once bought an “egstractor” (hard-boiled egg peeler) just for fun. It took me 25 minutes to peel the shell off a single egg! It was really cool! (I returned it.)

I bought some device to make my abs stronger. Ended up at the chiropractor after I strained my neck. I bought a slicer thing and my then-11 year-old-daughter, decided to use it WITHOUT permission to slice an apple and sliced off a part of her finger. It healed OK because of her age, but that was the end of TV products for us.

Seems to be a lot of that stuff at GoodWill.

When my DW can’t sleep, she wakes me up and makes me suffer with her.
When I can’t sleep, she kicks me out of bed, to watch the infomercials in the living room.

Re pedegg and pedicures: I read a recent article in the local newspapers about pedicure places putting your feet in a warm tub of water filled with fish that will eat your dead skin off your feet.

I’d never buy anything sold in an infomercial - it’d only encourage them to have more infomercials. And if I did, I’d never ever buy anything from that loudmouth, Billy Mays, who screams all of his commercials. I never really know what he’s hawking at the top of his lungs though since my finger instantly hits the mute button. I also never ever buy anything where I’m solicited via the phone or at the door (except for Girl Scout cookies).

Please don’t support infomercials, phone solicitors, door solicitors, or Billy Mays!
