The Standardized Test Scores:
I’m only planning on taking the ACT, and the first time I took it I got a 28. I’m pretty sure this will go up ATLEAST to a 30, because I’m doing this preparation class this fall. So let’s say my ‘projected’ is the minimum of what I want… a 30. (this will kill me I know)

The Extra Curriculars:
Alright if your stuck in the middle of nowhere, it’s kinda hard to find extra curriculars, so bear with me.
1. Concert Mistress for school Orchestra (since 10th grade)
  2. National Science Achievement Academy–(only given to 2 students out 75)
  3. Topeka Youth Symphony Orchestra (since 6th grade)
  4. Founded the Youth Group Organization of Topeka: a group of Asian Indians who get together every so often and do charity work
  5. Created a Project Sucess: I went to Hyderabad India and located this blind school, and I’ve been raising money here to sponser a child back there. My goal is to raise atleast 500 dollars if not more. So far, I’m half way there.
  6. National Honors Society-- tutor
  7. Teaching students the violin ( I have 6 students)
  8. Student of the Month 5 times (only given to students that have made a difference)
  9. Model U.N (I’ll do this 2 years)
  10. In the process of organizing a violin workshop for prospective violin students (it’ll be at my house)

Those are the major awards/extra curriculars that I do.

I’m thinking of applying to the following places.
Duke University
Trinity University (Texas)
UMKC–6 year med program
WashU
University of Chicago
Northwestern
Emory
Brown (def. reach but whatever)

Any thoughts? I realize my standardized testing kinda low, but if I improve that to above a 30, (which is what I’m hoping) do I still have a chance at atleast SOME of these schools?) Thanks in advance.

oh I forgot to add that my teacher recs and essays will be amazing. :)

your similar to me, i have everything but good standardized test scores… and your list is almost exactly the same as mine. I have been told that especially for duke, northwestern, and emory i am rite on target. Duke is kind of iffy though, always b/c you never kno wat to expect. but for northwestern and emory i think you are extremely qualified and i would call them a match to a slight reach

hey are you indian too? haha that’s so cool! Maybe we might end up at the same university, and thanks for the advice. Any others plz?

Get a 30+ on the ACT and you’ll be a good applicant to U.Chicago.

thanks greenblue for the encouragement. This college process makes me soo worried! any other advice anyone? plzz!

Rural Val’s are a hot commodity, so raise that SAT and you can go to a lot of the top schools.

yep im indian too, and i do speech and debate too. lol

I don’t think you should worry too much about your test scores. Ad coms aren’t dumb, they’ll look at where you’re from and see you took advantage of all the opportunities you could, that you didn’t have access to the tutors and prep books other may have had. I think you’ve quite a good chance at any of those schools. Even Brown. =)

oh melli, do you really think so? wow, I’m feeling so much better now. And yeah we have the prep books, but its still not the same. I learn better WITH someone you know? But we’ll see. My main goal is to get ATLEAST a 30 so hopefully I’ll have some decent chance. Thanks for everyone’s support! haha I just love reading these posts. Any other suggestions from anyone?
