Graduates here have been getting low 50’s base salary. That said, MightyNick could be including the following:

CPA Passing Bonus(5k at most?)
Cash value of Becker(2k at most? Some places deduct it from your CPA bonus)
Cash value of medical benefits
Cash value of 401k match.

Cash value of medical benefits would far exceed that total. And value of 401k is based on variable contributions you do on your own so no that’s not what be means.

I am not so sure what the heck is so confusing here. I live in one of he cheapest area of the countries and I was offered a package (excluding benefits) close to what he said.

Plsc, if you don’t mind me asking, where in the SE are you referring too. Im in Florida so I was wondering how close the figures you said are what can be expected in the area where i am. also, any particular reason you turned down the big4 offer?

EDIT: scratch that last question. I remember seeing in a few of your posts that you’re in MIS (if I remember correctly). I’m assuming that is the reason you turned the offer down

Yes 401k match is based on what you put in but it’s up to a certain maximum. So if they match 4% of his salary and he actually takes advantage of that, he could easily add that in.

Besides this isn’t rocket science. If you want to know what people are getting paid go to GoingConcern.com, TaxTalent, or CPAnet and find the threads or articles about it.

Why would I be spreading false information? I’m talking about Big 4, Northeast area (think NY/NJ/PA). So yes, cost of living is higher relative to the southeast or midwest. By 63K combined I mean base salary + CPA bonus (1st year) and Becker review compensation. Jonahrubin is right.

Since this is “everything about acctg” to what extent is acctg as a profession subject to outsourcing? I have been seeing this in the computer / engineering field, and I wondered about acctg.

the OP’s beginning post said that acctg is ‘recession proof’ (agreed), but to what extent is it ‘outsourcing proof’?

I understand that we always have to count the beans, whether it be in good times or in bad, but couldn’t the Indians do it , if they could do it more cheaply?

I am probably going to have to repeat this question in another thread since the last question I asked was completely buried in this thread and I could not find any responses - I cd not even find my post (it was - what are the best colleges for acctg? - THATs a tricky question that I bet was never asked b4 - not ).

As far as outsourcing, accounting is A LOT more than just “bean counting”. In the Big 4, many say it is just as much about customer relations as it is about accounting. Then theres self-employed CPAs that work with individual clients on a daily basis. There is much more involved than “bean counting” so I don’t see it having a huge threat to outsourcing

Just to be clear, I am not even close to an accounting expert, just based off logic it doesn’t seem to me like accounting jobs can be so easily outsourced when there are so many interactions between accountant and client in the field.

How has the employment rate been for recent accounting grads? And the salaries? I don’t expect 60K like some people on here… heck, 40K would be fine. Do most college grads get their CPAs and then a job, or do they get a job and then get their CPA? Do most go to work for the Big Four for at least a few years?

Also, anyone know if any of the Big Four recruit from UMD College Park? I’ve seen E&Y and PwC ads in our school paper so I’d assume so, but ya never know…

My niece started at over 25.00 an hour, makes much more now 3 years later, but lives in DC area, it evens out…she doesn’t want to think of her hourly salary in reality with all the hours and money spent.
My nephew got in the mid-40’s but was laid off recently. He hopes to find a new position soon. He was one of 30 let go (not all in his field)

So here is the situation. I will graduate with my Associate of Arts/Emphasis in Business from ASU-Beebe in December 2011. I took one year on campus and the other year and a half I am taking exclusively online classes. Reason being the on campus year was 4 years ago and I currently work full time 7:30 to 4:30 and have a 2 year old. I know I will get my Associates and be set up to continue on to Bachelor of Science in Accounting, but I am having problems finding a school (creditable brick and mortar, I won’t go through kaplan or any of the online schools since they aren’t really taken seriously) that will allow me to get the Bachelor’s or most of the classes for it online. I have to work so unless something drastically changes in the next year, I won’t be able to take off work to attend school. Does anyone know of any programs that would be what I am looking for?

what about gpa requirements after a big4 offer? I currently have a 3.7 and my offer says “you must maintain at least your current gpa”. What if my gpa drops to like 3.65, will they revoke my offer?

Thanks, here it is verbatim : “the offer is contingent upon maintaining, at a minimum, your current gpa and timely completion of degree. At our discretion, we may withdraw your offer at any time these conditions are not met”.

As I said in a previous post, I have a 3.7 overall and 3.5 in accounting classes. I’ll probably get 3 A’s and 2 B’s which is 3.6 gpa for the term.

anyone hear of a firm revoking an offer because of grades? I can understand getting a bunch of C’s or failing, but what about 1 C in a non-accounting class?

I have posted some remarks about accounting previously and notice the thread is still continuing. To those who are currently interviewing you might as well see for yourself what it is all about , good luck . To those of you just starting out, I was looking yesterday at something related and came upon an interesting website. The name of the website is the anonymous accountant (or something very similar),the thread is called “Holy crap this really sucks”.In this blog young professional talk about their first few years experiences with the “big four”. My interest in reading this and other accounting related reviews is/was to determine whether others experiences mirrored my own nightmare experiences which it apparently does.I downloaded the blog which complains about how people were dissatisfied with their own accounting experiences . I thought it might be a page or two THERE WERE LIKE 250 PAGES of similar mirrored complaints. For those of you who are going to find a way to “learn to love” accounting, good luck I guess it can be done. But take a look at what people are saying in this blog about deteriorating health and specifically COUNT THE NUMBER OF TIMES THE WORD DEPRESSED IS USED TO DESCRIBE THEIR CURRENT DEMEANOR.

Honestly. I don’t even believe he has worked for a big 4 before. I’m guessing he was just rejected by them all and now wants to spread his sorrow, like every other depressed person.
