Exactly how bad does a W look?

Hi, new poster here, been lurking around until now but here’s my story sorta.

I just found out I got into Berkeley today, and today is also the last day to withdraw from our classes for the semester. I decided to take statistics online to fulfill the suggested prereq for political science for Uc Davis and now I found myself struggling slightly with the new material. What hurts most is that the final exam is worth 75% of our grade. Now I think I have a fair shot at a C grade, but I don’t want that to hurt me and cause Cal to rescind my grade, and yet if I drop the class now I feel like that puts me in danger of being rescinded as well. So I guess what I’m asking is, exactly how bad does a W look?

I’ve never withdrew before and I have taken a math class my first semester, got a B. I dont know if that information affects anything…

Thanks for any advice and such. Sorry if this question had been asked over and over again but I’m feeling panicky…lol…

Is Stat a pre-req at Berkeley for your major? Will dropping it put you under 60 units?

If it is major related, then it is probably bad. I would ask your counselor.

The thing is, I took it because I was applying to Davis and it was suggested on Assist. For Berkeley they don’t ask for stats. And now that I got into Berkeley, obviously Davis is no longer my concern. I just called the counseling office at my school and they’re all gone for the day. I honestly didnt think I would have made it to Berkley so I never considered it…

Your counselor would give you the right answer, but if I was gonna guess, I would say that it would be ok to take this W as long as you contact them right away.

Well, I found my admissions conditions…

In addition, you must:
Complete the following specific course(s):
Poli Sci 115, and the rest of your 13 transferable units in progress with satisfactory grades.

So I assume they don’t want me to drop the class. I guess I’ll take my chances and hope to God that I come out all right. Thanks for the replies though guys.

I’m taking stats too right now, and I am borderline between a C and B. Is there any kind of tutoring for math at your college? My school has a Math Learning Center, and they kept me from failing Math 4 last semester.

Yeah there are tutors at my college’s learning center. I’ve never actually been there, except once to get a paper proofread. I guess better late then never. I really regret taking this class online, the lack of assignments to pad the grade a little bit and dependence on the final exam is way too dicey.

I didn’t go to the MLC the first time I took math. People were asking me if I’d ever been there and I’d be like “no, that place sounds like it sucks.” Really though, I just didn’t know where it was on campus and didn’t want to take the time to find it. When I did find it, it was the greatest thing because they helped me so much. Use all of your school’s services!

2nd what T-Rav says. Use your math center as often as possible. Also, go and buy the solution manual. They cost about $30. I would have never passed stats otherwise.

the thing for me was that i got the book and solution manual from my friend so i have the material…its just learning by myself, the self motivation, and learning the concepts and formulas for different situations that i’m worried about.

Also that we’re gettin 2 hours to cover 30 questions in our cumulative final. She’s letting us use tables and such but still, its intimidating.

Niners-has she shown you how to use the calculator? If you know how to use the calculator well, it’s not even a matter of working out an equation, it’s a matter of inputting the correct info into the correct app on the calculator. A tutor can show you how to do this. I hired a tutor for two sessions, he showed me how to use the calculator for stats and I was good to go. Obviously the professor isn’t going to show you how to do this b/c (IME) professors don’t want to show you the easy way, they want you to agonize over it.

I received 1 “W” in a prerequisite (4 units), and 1 “W” in a required (3 units) course. Equaling 2 of which Admissions at CAL, UCLA, UCSD, UCD did not care about, as I was admitted to all four schools.

BTW I plan on attending CAL!! GO BEARS!!! GO BERKELEY!!!

Well I’ve written down the ways to do some of these problems on the calculator. I’ve still got 5 chapters to go and around a month to do it. It’s my overly anxious, nervous nature that’s taking over. I mean you would think a C would be relatively simple to achieve, even if the exam is 75% of our grade. But I don’t think I can sit and enjoy the moment…
