Excessive Anxieties

So I am a freshman in high school, and I know I don’t have to be worrying about colleges yet. I am fully planning to enjoy the high school experience and not get all crazy and drive myself to the brink as I have seen several people do. However, only this year did I realize that I want to pursue theatre in college, specifically at Northwestern. I know that to get into Northwestern theatre you need to have good theatre extra-curriculars. However, by the time I realized what I wanted to be doing in high school it was too late to join most of the activities. I plan on immersing myself in them next year but… my question is this: does the fact that I did no theatre extra-curriculars my freshman year hurt me a lot in terms of Northwestern (or other BA or BFA theatre programs) application?

I am aware that grades for freshman year are nowhere near as important as soph and junior, but does the same hold true for extra-curriculars?

I’m feeling a little stressy haha. Thanks ya’ll!

I’d say do your best to keep your grades up and enroll in challenging classes. Pursue the ECs that you LOVE, and understand that may evolve as you go through high school! This is the time to develop great study habits, and to explore various interests.

If you love MT, I’d enroll in a ballet class and find a fantastic voice teacher if you can afford those things. I’d also look for community theatres where you can audition for summer shows, so you can start to build a resume even beyond school.

They call Northwestern “The Land of the Overprepared”, so it sounds like you might fit right in!! ;-D
