Exercise reccomendations/suggestions for over 50

So how do you exercise? What do you do for your routine?

I use to walk several miles several days a week. But now I do Tae Bo 5 days a week. I get it on utube.

I definitely work up a sweat and feel challenged. My blood pressure has improved.

Any other suggestions?

My dog is my walking buddy. We used to trail run (short, less than 30 minutes), which was fun. But she is too old now.

I have a rowing machine and recumbent exercise bike, and use both while watching Netflix rented movies or TV shows, 30 minutes at a time.

Cross country ski in the winter (although almost no snow last year, and not counting on too much in future winters!).

Dance games (are they games?) on the Wii and a Wii game called “Active Life Explorer” are fun and a change of pace.

I like to mix it up. Some days I walk. Some days I do machines and elliptical at the Y. Some days I do the routines in New Rules for Lifting. Some days I do various exercise routines that I’ve bookmarked from suggestions from interesteddad on the huge exercise thread. If I can’t do anything else, I at least try to get up from my desk once an hour and do some kettlebell swings.

We used to walk 2.5 miles 4-6 times a week with out dog, but she is old now and hasn’t been able to do it for more than a year. When we had a really bad winter two years ago, I bought a really nice treadmill. I’ve been hot and cold about using it, but since we got back from vacation this summer, I’ve been doing a mile about 5 times a week. I’m going to up that to 2 miles in a week or so. I’ve even got the dog on it. She can do about .3 miles. (It does require meat or cheese. She will not get on it for a dog treat!)

H & I also have a ballroom dance lesson where we definitely work up a sweat (2 hours every week) usually with a evening dance 3 weekends a month.

I’ve been a fan of Pilates for years. It strengthens the core muscles and stretches other muscles. I do better attending classes than working out at home.

Now that the ocean water is so warm, I’ve been going to the beach 3x a week. I don’t know if swimming in the ocean or walking on the sand is rigorous, but it’s fun.

Don’t ask me why, but I’m about half-way through P90X. Had been walking for several months without having anything to show for it and felt like I needed to jumpstart. . . something. Still don’t know what I’ll do when I’m finished.

I do like yoga–I figured out a year or two ago that you can buy a wide variety of routines on iTunes (everything from very short, easy, 10-20 minute videos to pretty long, intense workouts). (And FWIW, I’ve gone through stretches of doing pilates–very interesting exercises but I often end up tweaking something, usually my hips. I do think it makes you taller, though!)

I get up every weekday morning at 4:50 a.m. & drive 5 minutes to my local 24-hour Planet Fitness. Three times a week, I do the elliptical & a few weights. The other two days, I do a cardio-circuit. I have to be very careful of my back, and I also stretch (yoga moves) while watching tv at night. I used to run, then moved to aerobics … now can do neither due to back issues. I like yoga, but time & money make the Planet Fitness routine my workout of choice … I stick to it, and that is what counts.

Monday - yoga class at work
Wednesday - 45 min AM spin class
Thursday - 1 hr AM boot camp class
Sat/Sun - in winter, 1+ hr workout at gym - start w 10-15 min on treadmill, then free weights. in summer, I’m at shore house, so either 15+ mile bike ride w avg speed 17mph or 3 mile run on the beach.

This fall, I plan to add the Tuesday evening yoga class at my gym and try to get my sorry butt out of bed earlier on Fridays to hit the gym. Right now, I crawl in my hottub the mornings I don’t go to the gym. Only way to keep this 50+yo body going at this level. Did a sprint tri a few weeks ago and came in 350 of 1300 women, and 22 of 111 in my age group!

I play Racquetball 2-3 times per week & walk 3-5 miles on the other days. My wife does “Zumba” 3 days per week & walks the other days. This works out well unless you miss for one reason or the other. When you miss you just have to be very careful about limiting your eating. Stay away from eating out & gatherings where “buffet” style food is available for an extended period of time.

morrismm- Come join in on our Diet/Exercise thread. Most of us are over 50 (geezers, as interesteddad calls us) and there are a variety of things that we do for fitness and health. I am a competitive distance runner, BCEagle is a tennis player and runs, CJane does great strength workouts…on and on.

When I’m injured and can’t run, I do spin class or hot yoga. I should be doing more weights, but I’ve let that slide lately.

I run three days a week. If I can run, ANYBODY (without physical problems) can, lol. I have found nothing else that gives a workout like running does. When I’m injured (very rarely), I reluctantly use the arc trainer. Two days a week, I take a strength class at the Y.

I’m not in the proper age category, but I’ll add a suggestion. Tai chi.
