Exercise to YouTube? Post your favorites!

During the winter, my D15 and I often put on a YouTube exercise video for 20-30 mins in the evening - yes, we exercise to it!!

I’m betting lots of you use youtube for favorite workouts. Thought it might be fun to post av finds so we can all get some variety.

This is a new FAVORITE - it’s Zumba, but pretty followable. Good upbeat music. Love the young guy leading it. He even gives you drink breaks. :). It’s 50 mins long, but do as much or as little as you like.

Got one to share??? If you post one, post a short description of the type of exercise, difficulty - that kind of thing.

Here’s where it all started for me. The very first workout I did as a 250 pound ol’ fat guy…

[Core Workout: Ab Exercises for Beginners - YouTube](<a href=“Core Workout: Ab Exercises for Beginners - YouTube”>Core Workout: Ab Exercises for Beginners - YouTube)

Thanks for starting this thread, abasket. I was online last night trying to find some good dance/exercise videos on youtube. I need to get started and I figure that’s a good way to do it–in the privacy and convenience of my own home. Looking forward to seeing what people like. :)

I just started doing this myself. I am over 53, haven’t exercised in years!! and probably 30 lbs overweight. I started with Leslie Sansome walking videos (1,2,and 3 mile). Now I’ve moved onto Jillian Michaels 30 day shred series. I also found this website called Fitness Blender that has lots of videos. I recently discovered a Barre workout on there (combo ballet, pilates and yoga moves) which appears easy but is very tough.

I seem to be more motivated to exercise when I have different things to do and I am done in 30-45 minutes. I don’t have the stamina or desire to spend anymore time than that.

Thanks for the Zumba tip, I’m going to try that one this week. I would have copied the links but I’m not too good at that. They are easy to find.

This is a good idea for a thread, abasket. I’m off-and-on trying to get back into exercise. Have a fair number of DVDs, newer and older, that I’ve used, but I like the idea of using youtube (for free!). I’ve been thinking about looking up a Zumba something but have been too lazy. A little personal info/recommendation really helps sort out the plethora of stuff that’s available.

I also like the concept of the barre workout, hokiefan–in my head I’m a ballerina. ;)

[Fitness Blender Total Body Barre Workout ? 39 Minute Barre Workout Video, Fitness Blender](Fitness Blender Total Body Barre Workout - 39 Minute Barre Workout Video | Fitness Blender)

I think I did this right. Here is the link to the Barre workout (I hope). The whole workout is 39 minutes but that includes the cool down and stretch. They advise to do just half the video at first until you get used to it. I can only do one round of exercises and the cool down. The next day I could barely walk. Good luck.

Hokiefan, I have done the Leslie Sansone walking videos - these are PERFECT for someone just getting back into exercising or who is perhaps intimidated by some of the more intense videos.

We bought a cable to hook up our computer to the flat screen at Radio Shack - now its super easy to put the YouTube video right on the big screen (as opposed to trying to exercise off the computer screen set up on the coffee table!!!)

Here’s a link to one of the Leslie Sansone walking videos - you may also like her videos as a parent, because she is NOT a 20 year old - she’s more like us parents!!!

[Exercise TV / Start walking at home 2 miles with Leslie Sansone - YouTube](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube)

abasket, that is what I have to do. I have the mac on an old entertainment center so I can see the cardio stuff. But when it comes to floor work, I have to grab the computer and move it to a lower table. I knew these cables were available but never had the need for one. Gosh, that whole you tube exercise world is something, kind of like Pandora’s box.

I hope we get some more suggestions. I want to figure out a strength training program without hurting myself:) I have 3, 5 and 8 lbs weights which I do use with some of the Jillian Michaels videos. But I would like to work in something more structured.

Exactly - Pandora’s box! Once we figured out we could hook the computer up to the tv our viewing choices became wide open - since we are Amazon Prime members there is lots available for free viewing through Amazon - still have to see if there are exercise videos THERE!

Thanks for starting this thread!

Just looked at both the Zumba and Leslie Sansone walking youtubes. Anyone else find that they can do either feet or arms but try putting them together and all he@# breaks loose? I just can’t do both at the same time.

I’ve always felt cheated when I walk my dog–he’s old and there’s no exercise at all for me–just stop and sniff, stop and sniff. But now if I do the walking video I can exercise at home and relax (cool down) outside with my aged dog!!

Thanks.

Great thread. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for…video suggestions from people who’ve actually used them. I don’t have the patience to search you-tube for videos I think I might like and can reasonably do. I’ll probably give the Zumba and Leslie Sansone a try.

Here’s one of my favorites from the old Exercise TV channel on Comcast. i was so sad when Comcast pulled the channel last year. It’s a dynamic mid level yoga work out that emphasizes flow. It concentrates on legs and butt but is a good all over workout too.

The instructor is very down to earth and engaging.

[Yoga and Pilates - Hips, Buns and Thighs Yoga Season: 1 - Video](http://www.metacafe.com/watch/hl-11185372/yoga_and_pilates_hips_buns_and_thighs_yoga_season_1/)

martharap- I don’t have any trouble coordinating the arms and legs. But I do have a beagle who likes to sniff and sniff on a walk. I was ‘pretending’ that walking him was exercising but it is not. So now I walk to Leslie San. 2 mile or 3 mile video. I feel like I get a decent workout. She can get annoying but I just grin and bear it. I also use those walking tapes to warm up before I do the Jillian Michaels 30 day shred. I am on the second level of that. The 2 mile tape is done in 30 minutes and the Jillian Michaels is a 20 minute workout. I figured I can find ~45 minutes in the day to do that. Otherwise I just walk and give it 100%.

I am going to try that Zumba tonight.

The Zumba is long - about 50 mins I think - but he takes breaks about every 10 minutes so you can choose your own time limit - I just really liked the beat, the music, and the head guy in front - pretty easy to follow.

I sometimes have trouble with both legs and arms at the same time. I try and master one before adding the other. :)

This is a great thread. abasket, Amazon Prime does have some exercise videos for free streaming or for rent. At the moment, I have this one rented for a week:

She has a few shorter youtube videos; I did this one last night:

[Yoga for Releasing the Psoas with Mimi Solaire - YouTube](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube)

Horrible sound quality, but a great video.

Also, Tara Stiles has some great yoga videos:

[Jillian Michaels: No More Trouble Zones Workout - Circuit 1 - YouTube](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube)

I don’t usually like Jillian Michael’s but her “No more trouble zones” has some nice combo exercises and and you can pick and choose what ones you want to do.

I might try the Zumba this weekend and the barre…I need variety. I used to use Lesley Sansone/Kathy Smith but the chattering etc. gets to me after a while.

Well I tried two of the workouts recommended here. The first was a simple core routine recommended by interestdad. It seemed simple at first but guess what, not so simple. But I liked how the instructor was very good about explaining form. These are four core exercises you can do anywhere without music. I am going to keep working on these because I know they will make me stronger.

Now the zumba. I must be getting old because I could not follow this. My arms and legs would not coordinate. I just did my best but I feel like I was throwing my arms and legs around crazy. The next day my elbow and knee hurt. I might be done with zumba. For me, the walking videos are better. The pace is slower but I can get more out of the workout if I want to by increasing my pace. I must have looked crazy doing this video because even my old beagle looked up from his bed and walked slowly out of the room.

Next on my list is to try the yoga videos suggested. As I mentioned before, I would like to find a routine where I can incorporate some weight training into my day. I want to lose weight but also get stronger. I’m tired of being tired at the age of 53.

Hokie, what’s easiest for me is to figure out exercises I want to do and then do them at my own pace, listening to my choice of music. My workout at home takes me a half hour. I only do the weights for a little under 10 minutes of that, yet it still has made a difference! The upper body exercises I do at home with weights are rows, bicep curls, tricep kickbacks, flys, military press, and sometimes lateral arm raises or front raises. Plus pushups. At the gym I also do inverted rows using the smith machine. Back to the stuff at home, I do core exercises for 10 mins, and the remaining portion of the workout is a lot of leg stuff. Three days a week I run, so this is for cross-training and the weight resistance.
