Exeter clothing tips for boys please

Last fall one prep school (not Exeter) nabbed a day student ferrying boarders to a nearby town - totally against the rules/major honor code infraction.

Destination: Salvation Army and Goodwill for winter coats and winter formal outfits. Hmmm - t’was a puzzle for the school administrations on how to respond.

Don’t worry about spending a lot of money for clothes. If your son wants to wear jeans, make sure he has several pair that fit. They don’t have to be expensive designer jeans. Old Navy is a good source for less expensive dress shirts, and as for ties, try a second-hand store. Also know that he can buy clothes at school for $1 - the students have a thrift store, and it is considered very chic to wear second-hand clothes. (They even had a fashion show this year.) Remember that they can wear turtlenecks, too. For shoes, Converse All-Stars, flip flops, and snow boots are key.

When my son was at a different school, where kids were teased about having inexpensive clothes, I bought some designer clothes off of eBay. The summer was a great time to buy his new winter coat from eBay. (List price over $350, I bought it for $75.)

Good luck - your son will love it.

Thanks all!

Do clothes need iron on name tags for laundry service? Thanks!!

No, they don’t.

I assume it’s necessary with the laundry service to have all your clothes marked with your name. If you don’t need iron on name tags, what’s the best method for this? What have people had success with?-- I’m not looking forward to this task!

I mark my son’s clothes with a permanent marker on the back of the neck or some other less conspicuous place (like on the tag if it is a dark item). My son has not had a problem with E&R other than with socks. The “hello kitty” ones he received in his laundry bag last year were a huge source of amusement for the dorm!

Now I just give him a bag of cheap socks from Walmart at the start of the year and again at Christmas. No point stressing out - a black sock is a black sock.
