Exeter - Dorm reputation and other input

you could dislike your dorm even if you requested one, so i’d say let them place you since they seem to do a good job. especially since you don’t really know much about the other dorms
also, is amen really all swimmers? i never really got that impression for amen but i don’t know.

I understand that they do a good job on places students from one dorm to the next, but does anyone know more specifically how? Apparently all the information used to determine your dorm is the very first sheet that was used to apply. How could they know enough information to base their decision off of?

they’re magic :o)

No one reallly answered my question from before…at Exeter, are you more likely to get a double or a single?

sball12, incoming preps usually get roommates, incoming upperclassmen usually get singles. But you’re an incoming Upper ('10!), right? So you could very possibly be put into a House and not a dorm.

it really depends on if you are going to live in a “dorm” or a “house.” I guess as a new upper, you would have more chance of getting a single in a dorm-but you never really know; it really depends lots of things-on the vacancy of the dorms/ppl going on term abroad etc.

p.s. mcconnell(sp?) has small rooms and thin walls apparently- and dvnbar has huge rooms-it’s the biggest girls’ dorm-consequently it’s hard for ppl there to know everyone/bod as a whole

I found this older thread interesting, any current Exonians out there who have the latest intel on reputations of Exeter dorms? Is Wentworth still the only “jocky” dorm? Which ones are the smallest? largest? nicest? (please answer for both boys and girls dorms.)

Yes, Wentworth remains very jocky, I honestly think that stereotype cannot be broken. My S loves it!
A tip about W - if your S is placed there, either none of the common vacuum cleaners work, go missing for periods of time, or periodically have essential parts removed. The floor parents require a minimal level of cleanliness that involves vacuuming once in a while. My son’s room was often carpeted with popcorn and m&m’s (and other stuff - ick) and it was gross. I am sending him with at least a dustbuster or something this fall to tame the mess. Some other kids had their own dustbuster or cheap stick vacuum from Target and they actually did use them from time to time (so I’ve been told).

Thanks, liddyb4. I wonder if the common vacuum cleaners work in the other boys dorms either! Did your son or his roommate bring a rug for the floor? Can you shed any light on the “electric coolers” they are allowed to bring? I went to the compactappliance.com website but didn’t find anything. I am not sure what the difference is between an electric cooler and a small refrigerator…

liddyb4 - If your son tells his student council dorm reps about the vacuum problem, they should be able to get a replacement for it (that is their job, anyway).

momtosportsfiend - my dorm faculty explained that refrigerators have 3 prongs on their plug, whereas an electric cooler has 2 prongs… I don’t know if that helps at all. I tried Googling “electric coolers” and here is what Target lists: [electric cooler : Target Search Results](http://www.target.com/gp/search/183-7612219-3499811?field-keywords=electric%20cooler&afid=google&CPNG=Sports&LNM=electric_cooler&LID=1185257&ref=tgt_adv_XSGT0775)

Bump.

I figured this thread be be mighty interesting now, and I know I myself would like to know more about the Exeter dorms. Any current students want to fill us in?

Yeah I can. Are there any things you’re specifically curious about.

In your opinion, which is better - big dorm or small dorm?
Can you explain the whole stealing benches/dorm rivalry thing?
Do any dorms have a good/bad reputation?
In your opinion, which is the best dorm?
Just anything you think we should know, basically. Feel free to tell us stuff we didn’t know we should know! Thank you so much for taking the time to fill in we applicants! ^_____^

I personally prefer small dorms because you get a lot closer to everyone in your dorm. in some of the larger dorms you don’t really know everyone.

I’m not really sure about the whole stealing benches/dorm rivalry thing.

Dorms do have good or bad reputations.

Ewald has a reputation for being a really weird guys dorm “Every Woman Always Leaves Disapointed”.

Main street is known for being kind of a party dorm (or as much of a party dorm as you can be at exeter) they actually had like 50% of the fatigues reported in the health center because they’re up all night.

Merrill is known for being a really strict dorm even though there are some “slutty girls” who end up getting illegal Vs But they have actual enforced lights out. The dorm fac actually goes around and checks if the lights are on in the rooms.

I don’t know too much about Langdell but their slogan is “Langdell bangs well”

Amen is probably the nicest dorm on campus they have two room doubles and a common room on every floor.

Browning house is a dorm thats filled almost entirely with new lowers. It used to be a guy’s dorm

Dow house is a guys dorm which has a whole bunch of PGs

Lamont is a smaller dorm it has the same amount of people as Amen but with one tiny common room that also is their kitchen (most dorms have a seperate common room and kitchen) but its a really close dorm. Like everyone knows all of the other people pretty well even if they aren’t best friends. It has a reputation for having the worst living conditions but it got redone over the summer so its better than it was, they took the carpet out and painted.

Dvnbar is the biggest girls dorm they have like 60-70 people.

The best dorm really depends on what you’re looking for. :)

Oh, if I get in I’ll ask for Amen! I really want to belong to a dorm with a good work ethic… partying is not for I. X__X Lamont sounds nice, too! ^^ What gender are those?

Oh sorry. Lamont and Amen are both girls dorms.

Do people tend to make friends mostly from their dorms, or do they branch out? And are there sort of like ‘dorm cliques’? Like people in the same dorm hanging out with each other all the time.

Both. At the beginning especially people tend to make more of their friends outside the dorm. People want to be outsideof their dorm meeting people and stuff. Although some people go the other way around. Lamont is a good example of that. From the very beginning the lamontsters hung out together and they sort of branched out of the course of the last term and a half. They’re still really tight and they’re known as lamont. I tjink a lot more with guys dorms especially they’ll have a couple of friends like their roommate and someone down the hall and then hang out with them and other people from different dorms its not as much of a dorm group.

Haha, even at summer school, Ewald was the “nerdy dorm” and Main St. was the “party dorm.”

I stayed at Hoyt over the summer, so I can’t tell you about the student body or reputation. However, the dorm family is very nice. (They were very helpful and supportive to me, not too strict.) About half of the rooms are singles and the others are doubles. There are also six four-person rooms, which are really just two two-person rooms connected by a door. (The point is that the two rooms share one entrance to the hallway.) It is one of the older dorms (1903.) The common room is pretty small, but it has a fridge and a TV. It has its own washers and dryers. I encountered a roach once or twice near the bathroom, but it’s not a big deal and I suspect that most of the dorms have them. If you get placed in Hoyt, I would recommend bringing a shower curtain for good measure.

The Dunbar common room is large, but that’s all I know about it. Some people say the Wheelwright staff is strict, but they might not be the same in the summer as in the school year. (Dunbar, Wheelwright, and Hoyt are all girls’ dorms.) I think Cilley (boys) has an elevator, if you require one.

I don’t like the houses as much because they seem to be located much farther away from the heart of campus. Williams House (boys) is one exception. Also, people say that the houses are more cramped than the regular dorms, but that may not be true for all of them.
