Exeter - Dorm reputation and other input

Ahh, thanks!

Cilley has an elevator?! That is so cool. And are the people in Dunbar tight, even if there’s so many of them?

Well, I think Cilley has an elevator because my friend snapped his leg at the inter-dorm field day, and I think he mentioned using Cilley’s elevator. No one is supposed to use any elevators unless they absolutely have to. The highest you’ll have to climb is four stories anyway.

What are the genders for all of the dorms, just for reference (or is that on the website)? For instance, Main St.?

Main street, Ewald, Wentworth, Cilley, Peabody, Abbot, Webster and Soule are all guys dorms

Amen, Dvnbar, Lamont, Langdell, Merrill, Hoyt, Wheelwright, and Bancroft are alll girls dorms

Bumpity Bumpity Bump Bump!

Lots of the info. here is out of date as many of the dorms have recently been or are in the process of being renovated. Also, reputations come and go, but Exeter strives for a diverse mix in its dorms, so I think the feel of the dorm can change radically from one year to the next.

Hindsight is 20/20 of course, but I’ll offer this. My kid did not request his dorm and considered changing after prep year, not because he disliked the guys in his dorm, but because so many of the guys he had more in common with were in other dorms. Ultimately, however, he chose to stay put, and I think that was a good choice. The social differences meant that some of his closest friends today are guys he has little in common with athletically or socially–but they’ve found other common ground in some lighter ec’s and academics. His adviser was absolutely wonderful, a great match for him, and introduced him to the sport that his now his passion. More importantly, the dorm feels like home. He had another friend who requested a dorm the summer before prep year at the urging of some posters on CC who said it was the best dorm. Let’s just say it turned out badly.

Once you know what dorm you’ll be in, I think it’s worth posting here to ask some info. about the logistics. Also, if you’re coming in as an upper or senior, it might be worth letting Exeter know if you’d prefer to be placed in a house or a dorm–houses tend to be smaller with mostly uppers or seniors (though not sure how that worked last year when they switched a house over from girls to boys to accommodate the overflow of boys.) Maybe a current student would have more insight into that one.
