Exhausted my Financial Aid....Give it to me straight.

Lets cut to the chase here…
Went to
Northern Illinois University 2008 - 1 Semester (Failed out of every class and was academically dismissed)
Triton College 2008 - 1 Semester
Wilbur Wright College 2009 - 1 Semester

–Got Pregnant –
Went to Everest College - Graduated. w/ Certificate in Medical Assisting
– Moved–
–Had the baby–
–working full time w/ 2nd job –
Went to Brown Mackie College - Graduated w/ Associates in Information Technology after failing MULTIPLE classes like a dum-dum…

Attending Ashford University 6 classes remaining- – Out of Funds.

Ashford Classes run $1,406 PER Class. Ridiculously Expensive program but one that works really well for me between my full time job and my part time job and taking care of a now 7 year old.

My Own stupidity had landed me in the situation I have found myself in, do I have ANY options here outside of
Private loans/ Scholarships or is this it for me? I know Private Student Loans are the worst …

With a $5,000 Balance at Ashford and 7 classes remaining we’re looking at a $12,000+ loan to pay back ON TOP of my Federal Grant Loans…

sigh

Ashford is a for-profit college that has been the subject of multiple state and federal lawsuits.

I’ll let others weigh in, but IMO you shouldn’t give a penny more to this college. Whatever you do, do NOT get a loan through them or anyone they recommend.

My son was in a boy scout troop with several admins from Ashford. We were floored by their lavish homes and wealth. Coincidence? No idea. But the school was slapped with fines: http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/business/technology/sdut-bridgepoint-consumer-protection-student-loans-2016sep12-story.html

Give it to you straight: your “degree” may not be worth the paper it is printed on.

I’m not familiar with Ashford but credits from many for profit schools are not transferable to legitimate colleges. You are nine or ten years out of high school and out of funds. Your best bet is to find a job that offers tuition reimbursement. IME large companies and municipalities often pay for employees college classes. You should look into it. Don’t borrow more money.

I would suggest you work, and try to save some money. Try to find a career interest where you can get a two year degree at a community college. Maybe attend part time while you work full time.

At this point, spending more money on college without a clear direction is a waste of your money.

Oh goodness. I just noticed that all of your college classes have been at for-profit colleges (except NIU).

Can you just go to a local community college- a PUBLIC one- and pay your way through courses to an associate’s degree that will help you land a well-paying job? This would probably be your best bet.

Your best option probably is to keep working, and take one class at a time and pay for Ashford out of pocket. It will be a much slower route to your goal than you want to have to take, but you can get there.

You also could look at the distance ed program offered by your own home state public universities. One of them might give you the flexibility you need at a better cost. For rxample, University of MD University College has a whole lot of online programs, and accepts up to 90 semester hours of transfer credit.

I’d quit taking classes at a for profit school and start taking courses at your local public community college. I think a degree from an accredited cc will be more useful than anything a for profit college gives you. If other colleges don’t recognize them, I wouldn’t expect employers to either.

I’ve been a hiring manager for 30+ years. “Degrees” from for-profit colleges are not worth the paper on which they are written. Applicants are not even considered. Don’t pay another penny!

Please don’t take private loans to pay for a for-profit college.

I actually already work for a municipality. They do offer Tuiton reimbursement but only if attending on campus colleges which is not an option for me. I work two jobs and I’m a single parent.

@romanigypsyeyes I make a little over $55,000 a year right now at my full-time job. I was going for the bachelors in Public Admin to take over my bosses job to look more “prepared” for the position when he goes to retire within the next 5 years. I already have an associates Degree - I was trying to get my bachelors.
Perhaps try to Transfer as @happymomof1 said to a public stat uni with online courses…

A bachelor’s from for profits are just super expensive wallpaper. Generally worthless.

So best bet here is see if an accredited university will accept my transfer credits, and take out a private student loan to finish my degree there?

I have 99 Credit Hours so Far I know most colleges will take up to 90…But as most of you have stated - some may not even recognize them…

sigh

Yes, your best bet is to find an accredited place that will accept most of your credits. Some will. Fingers crossed for you!

Do not let the transfer advisor make all decisions about your credits based on your transcript.

Put together a packet which includes the syllabus, any required projects, extra reading you did, plus any papers you’ve written for those classes.

It’s easy to look at a transcript and decide that since the college doesn’t have a course with that title, you shouldn’t get credit for the work. It’s a little harder when that person is actually looking at the reading list, completed projects, etc.

Help them help you get credit for work you’ve already done. And follow to a T whatever recommendation you get from the advisor on how to finish your degree in the most efficient way possible- don’t get to your last semester and discover you missed a pre-requisite along the way.
Good luck.

Go to the HR department at work and find out about the tuition reimbursement.

If you are a single parent then I don’t think they can expect you to live on campus. Also if the benefit only pays for tuition, then why would there be a requirement like that?

Find out at a local school which bachelor’s degree you could get in the shortest amount of time with the credits you already have.

By this do you mean they will not pay for online classes? I find that hard to believe. In most cities the bosses are working on Master’s degrees from online colleges. Please go to HR to find out for sure. The CC’s and universities in my state all have some c@invaderofbunnie

Honestly since you have a child you need a good income stream quickly. Look at some of the certificate programs your local CC offers.

Good idea to check with HR. The restriction about paying for classes only at brick-and-mortar campuses may really be more about only paying for accredited programs, than it is an outright rejection of distance education. If the objection is specifically to distance ed, you need absolute clarification as to why that modality is unacceptable. Are there sufficient 4-year institutions in you area for students like you to take the (presumably) evening and weekend courses that they’d need while holding down a typical 9-5 job? Chances are that your home-state public Us have some programs that are offered both on campus and in distance format. Your transcript and diploma would not indicate any difference at all between those classes. Other than HR noticing that you are registered at a campus several hours away, there would not be any way for them to know that your classes were distance ed.

@OspreyCV22 - The language in our clause states the following:

“The College or university can be public or private, but non-for profit, online or brick and mortar facility allowed.”

I read that line over and over, I have no idea what that means.
The funding pool is on a first come first serve basis, and must pertain to employees position.

I’m a Utility Billing Manager, studying for Public Administration, so I’m not sure if I would even qualify?
