Expanding ECs at Harvard?

Hi,

What ECs/sports or majors at Harvard are in need of participants?

I have heard that some colleges use a student’s choice of activities/majors as a ‘tipping factor’, especially if they have few members or are attempting to expand. Also, are there any specific sports for which Harvard, or any Ivy is specifically trying to recruit?

Thanks!

I sincerely hope that you are a sarcastic ■■■■■.

I’m not, junior. What is there to ■■■■■ about anyway? I “sincerely” have a question.

Ehh…I, like juniorinhs, am skeptical of people who tailor their ‘interests’ to please others…esp. the admissions office.

Trolly Wolly…

They’re looking for Nobel prize laureates. Starting point?

Well, Clifton Dawson has graduated, so Harvard has an opening for a 1000 yard rushing running back. Likewise, Rivers Cuomo has graduated, so now there is an open slot for a rock star. And Natalie Portman has been out for several years now with no new movie stars in sight, so Harvard is probably really desparate to fill that gap. Famous movie stars applying now will likely get a “tipping factor” boost.

So football star, rock star, and movie star are probably your best bet ECs right now.

I think Harvard is in need for applicants who do something because they LIKE it - not because they think Harvard likes it.

Just the kind of responses I was expecting.

I’m not going to change what I’m doing (it’s way too late now for me). I’m just curious.

unless you’re talking about getting officially recruited for a varsity sport (whose coaches have a certain number of Band 1, 2, and 3 recruits to get in with the admissions office, PM me for more info) the admissions office doesn’t really take into account which particular ec’s you do in relation to what the college needs.
First off, the official line would probably be that the college doesn’t value any one EC organization over any others, and they’re EXTRA-curricular anyway so the college doesn’t play much of a role in shaping their dynamics (ex. the recent closing of H-bomb magazine). Also, IF the type of EC you do matters in relation to anything, it’s in relation to the rest of your class. The admissions office wants to create a diverse well balanced class, so you’re really only competing with each other.
I think you highly overestimate how much type of EC would matter though.

In terms of majors though, female engineers and scientists are always a plus (although I’m assuming from your sn you’re a dude). In general though, no department here is really struggling for students…

I have heard that HRO ‘nudged’ the admissions office into admitting some good french horn players a few years back…

The only way I can conceivably see that occurring is if the french horn players were best-in-the-field concert-professional level, in which case that’s a hell of a hook anyways and the individuals probably didn’t need a nudge.
