Expelled Frat?

What exactly does it mean when a frat is expelled or banned, as I’ve read ZBT and one or two others have been? Does that mean they have no house, or can’t recruit, or have parties etc.?

Most social fraternities are part of the Interfraternity Council (IFC). They are recognized by the University and are allowed the benefits of being in IFC. They participate in active recruitment and are allowed to have parties. When a fraternity commits a violation (dirty rushing, unregistered party, legal issues), either that fraternities nationals or the IFC itself can place that fraternity on probation (usually not being allowed to hold parties, rush limitations, etc). Repeated violations/probations can lead to suspensions, in which the chapter must participate in either IFC or Nationals mandated programs and is usually not allowed to host social events or participate in formal recruitment.

If violations become a persistent problem, a fraternity can be expelled from IFC by IFC (ZBT, for holding formal recuritment) or have their nationals close their chapter and re colonize after the current brothers graduate (Beta). The fraternity’s brothers obviously still exist, but they are no longer recognized by IFC, and their nationals may take away their house (Beta).
