I hope to become a sports writer. Is it necessary to have previous experience in journalism in order to major and excel in a journalism major and school? Basically, is going to journalism school, say at Newhouse, impossible and overwhelming to be successful if you have no journalism experience before college?

It would help you, if the program is selective. It probably isn’t that big of a deal if you haven’t written for papers, if you do well in English and on the Writing SAT.

Anyone please?

Guessing here, but it’s an educated guess-- I would think that a school would want you to have tried the field out before you decided it was what you wanted to major in. You still have a chance to do sports writing for your school paper. You can start a sports blog. These are only two thoughts off the top of my head, but they’re super easy and they could give you experience. Without that experience, how do you know that this is what you want to do?
