As of now, I am enrolled in Honors Seminar in Composition at Pitt for this coming fall. If anyone took the Honors section, I was just seeking an opinion/testimony about the course.

I also have a specific question: I know that the focus of the course is the development of my writing, but how much reading goes along with this writing? Do you find yourself drowning in reading assignments along with the papers?

dppilotmets - I think you are studying actuarial math at UPitt. My son is a HS senior and narrowing down to about 8-10 act sci programs to apply. All of them have act sci degree program and are listed on the SOA website, except Pitt. Can you tell me if Pitt has an act sci student club that organize professional seminars and career events? How active is it? I can’t seem to find any info on the act sci student club. How big or robust is the Pitt’s act sci program? Roughly, how many act sci students graduate per year and how many SOA/CSA exams passed there per year? How do you like Pitt and the act math program so far? We are very interested in Pitt because of the close location and potential scholarship $$. Thanks.

This is a late response about Pitt’s actuarial program. I’ve come to find that, although there is an actuarial club that has some connections with employers and a third-party career fair, the program itself fell below my expectations. There aren’t enough sections of classes vital to the major and the exams (e.g. They run one probability course in the fall semester, which includes a lot of non-actuarial majors, and no spring sections). I have resorted to completely self-studying for my first exam (1/P), which somewhat defeats the purpose of going to a school with an actuarial program.

Pitt is a very good school for students who are Pre-Pharm/Pre-Med, and they do give good scholarships. However, if your son wants to be an actuary, I would suggest going somewhere else. I myself am looking to transfer to Michigan or UNC-Chapel Hill for my sophomore year.
