Experience with jazz bass college admissions

I am looking for feedback and experiences related to low GPA performance majors. I know what schools are an academic fit, and I believe those likely could be a talent fit too (like DePaul or VCU). But I am wondering where people have seen the needle move on more selective schools (not conservatories) based on talent and need for bassists. I’ve searched all over and can’t find groups or posts but pls direct me if I’ve missed them. Thank you!

Can you clarify your question? Are you looking for college/university music performance programs for a lower GPA student?

If so, can you provide student’s GPA and year in HS?

I don’t have a specific example of a needle moving, but I have read many threads and online discussions that suggest that a musician’s GPA could be quite a bit lower than a non-musician’s. The only school I’ve read that considers academics more highly is UMich.

It all really depends though… .I’ve heard the quip that NYO gets you into Stanford, but I know a violinist with a solid academic background who did NYO that has been deferred already from Princeton and UVA, so… I don’t think it’s all a perfect science. I would say if there is any school that you are interested in, just apply and see what happens. You never know if that year they need a jazz bassist and that’s what will give the edge. If the teacher knows and likes you, even better. If you have a lot of activities centered around music and can prove that “unique” aspect of your application, you will stand out from the 80,000 kids with a 4.0 and the same AP classes at those higher level schools.

Hello! I am a college advisor for an arts conservatory high school. In my experience, music programs are more lenient regarding academic record than other majors. They want to ensure that you have the ability to perform well in class and aren’t going to have to withdraw due to academic concerns. I’ve had students with lower GPAs be accepted into top schools (Vanderbilt, Duke, Columbia, etc.) because the music program had a need for that particular instrument. Connect with the bass studio teachers at the schools to ask them for their input and also to establish a relationship that could help you with admission later on.
