I used my free ACT score reports for Brown, Franklin and Marshall and Bucknell, but then scored very poorly on the Science section. I sent in my SAT scores which are better but I am going into science and wanted to explain my Sci scores in the extra information section. How does this sound?

“My Science score on the ACT is low only because I ran out of time and did not finish the last two sections. I read the information carefully to fully understand it, which was not the right strategy for the test.”

What score did you get exactly? Also, lots of colleges only look at three things: your composite, your math, and your english score. You should check with these colleges and ask how they look at the ACT.

But my advice is to NOT send this to the colleges. It wouldn’t be a very smart thing to do-- colleges probably realize why you got that score.

It just seems rather contrived to send this… I mean it’s your choice. Personally I think your guidance counselor is giving you bad advice. Is it too late to take the ACT again for this college? Maybe you should consider the January SAT, which does not even have a science section?

You say you sent SAT scores that are better. If true, college in determining admission will ignore ACT and use SAT because that is what they do when you send both – use the one they believe is higher. Personally, I would not send anything at all on your science score. I would particularly not send what you propose which does not provide a valid excuse (such as you were deathly ill) but instead actually says “I was not smart enough to do it right.”

Also, do not assume that colleges assume the science section has any relationship to what you might be able to do in science. It is not a true science section and and colleges that consider subsections of the ACT consider math and English as the more important of the four. In fact some science/engineering schools, Rose-Hulman and Gtech, use only the math and english sections for admission and ignore entirely composite, science, and reading.

Thanks for the advice. My only worry is that I am sending the January SAT to Brown because I’m retaking subject tests. So right now they only have my ACT scores. I’ll just mention that in the Additional Info section, though.
