Can someone PLEASE explain to me how it is possible that someone can have
a base GPA of 3.0 and then have a weighed GPA of 4.01 ? How can a weighed
GPA score increase by more than 1.0 if AP courses are counted as only a 1.0 point increase in total ?
THANKS

Unweighted GPA is considering every class out of the 4.0 scale, A being a 4.0, B being a 3.0 etc.

Weighted GPA may involve a 5.0/6.0 scale. At my high school, honors classes and AP classes counted for a 5.0, if you passed an AP exam, that class would count as 6.0. Thus weighted GPA is inflated, and WILL differ greatly among schools. Unweighted GPA is more important.

If I post my semester grades for all of my core classes can someone calculate my gpa as uf would. I keep getting conflicting advice and numbers from teachers and friends.

weighted GPA scales varies by district, and UF calculates its own weighted GPA. for instance, i had a 5.5/3.2 and was barely in the top 10% of my class, while in most other districts, a 5.5 is completely unheard of, so it is useless for comparison across districts, but particularly useful across my own district. valedictorians could get almost a 7.0 or something ridiculous like that, which people in other districts could think was absurd. my UF GPA was probably closer to 3.7, which isn’t nearly as big as the district weighted. that doesn’t amount to grade inflation or some other phenomena, its simply different scales.

unweighted is the standard gpa everyone is accustomed to. even this has problems for comparison when different schools have minus grades while others don’t, but its generally useful for comparison.

in regards to UF admissions, as mentioned before, they recalculate GPAs with their own scale, making it somewhat more level while still accounting for strength of schedule. additionally, because there are inconsistencies across districts for GPA, they heavily rely on class ranking. in order to do this, they assign specific people to cover certain schools/districts within the state for admissions. this ensures that the people who are reviewing the applications are aware of intra-district quirks, and are more capable of taking into consideration variations across districts to sort of counter ‘grade inflation’ and other inconsistencies that might give students in one district an advantage over students in another. for instance, in your case, there is likely someone in admissions who is aware you the caliber of some students who go to your school, and, if there is really a big difference between the GPAs of students who are clearly on the same level, they will take that into account.

We probably live in the same county.( Hillsborough) I’ve been trying to calculate my uf gpa and I keep getting answers between 3.92 and 3.97. I’ve read on cc that this difference could be huge because your chances increase dramatically if u have at least a 4.0 when rounded. Is this really true??? And would u consider class rank THAT important? Would u rank it above course load strength, because since I go to a highly ranked public school my class rank isnt that high. My gpa is 3.6/4.7 and it lands me well outside the top ten percent. Somewhere between top 20% and top 15% I imagine. But the funny thing is that many of the kids that are ranked above me have drastically lower unweighted gpa’s and bright futures gpa’s than me. I transferred from out of state from a school that only offered one honors class to freshman so i had to take all regular classes except for a semester of geometry honors. Because of this my weighted gpa is a good four points behind most of the kids in the classes I’m with. Sophomore year I rose to all honors and one AP, and junior year to all my cores AP except for honors precalc. Next year I will be taking four of five Ap’s. Do u think my low rank will be trumped by course load, and I’ve passed all of my Ap’s so far and wonder if that will have any effect. And will they take into account my strength increase from freshman to senior year. Also how much does being a urm help because I am a black male and here mixed reviews on how much it may help.

UF calculates gpa by adding 0.5 points to honors classes and AP classes. It only considers academic subjects (math, English, science, social studies and foreign language).
There is no difference between A+ A- and A.
Honor/AP A=4.5, B=3.5, C=2.5
Regular A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0

Is it correct that they do round gpa’s to the nearest tenth? And don’t they give u 1.0 for AP classes?

Weighted GPA (Florida Public University Standards) is calculated by taking the numeric whole value of an ACADEMIC course (Science, Math, English, Economics, Foreign Language, etc.) and adding .5 if it was an honors course or 1.0 if it was AP or Dual Enrollment.

For example: a B (B, B-, or B+) in AP Calc is a 4.0. An A in Honors chemistry is a 4.5. Recalculate each Academic course using this scale, add them up, and divide by the number of academic courses and that’s it.

As so far as a non-weighted 3.0 being calculated as a weighted 4.1, it is possible if they received A’s in their Academic courses (including Honors and APs) and C’s in their non-academic (PE, Music, etc.).

Sir-
I am truly thankful for your explanation and do appreciate your time and effort regarding my initial question.
If you dont mind me asking, it appears that from your previous replies, you are obviously quite knowledgeable regarding the admissions procedures and policies regarding The University Of Florida. Are you in any way affiliated with the admissions committee at UF and even if you are not, may I present you with several additional questions regarding the admissions process at UF ? Thanks

Anyone please? To the post quoted below…

Dude- you have an excellent chance on gaining acceptance base solely on your academic record.
