My best friend applied to JHU and got accepted. He’s now taking 3 AP’s and his grade dropped to a D in AP Calc. Now, the college has found out and they wrote to him asking him to explain his situation. He came to me for help, but I’m confounded as well…

He is playing a varsity extracurricular and is doing night classes to make up a failed class his sophomore year. Does the excuse of having the burden of a varsity sport on top of compulsory night school seem like a legitimate excuse for the drop in the grade, and do you think it is likely that JHU will rescind him?

He has all A’s in his all his classes except for that one AP Calc

I don’t know if Hopkins will rescind; that’s beyond my experience. But as an adult, I would say that his excuse is not “legitimate” - the first thing that needed to go was an extracurricular, not a class. He should have dropped the sport. The fact that he had previously failed a class sophomore year doesn’t look good either.

But if it’s the truth, then he has no choice but to send this explanation.

If he failed a class sophomore year than a D now isn’t exactly out of character, and therefore probably not grounds for rescinding admissions.
Chevda, I know it may be hard for a lot of people on CC to understand, but sports can be a VERY important part of peoples lives, providing a benefit to their physical and mental health. This kid has all A’s and one D, so it’s not like he’s shirking of school. If he was doing poorly in every subject than it might be wise to consider dropping the sport, but I personally don’t think I would give up sports for the sake of one class.

And I take it that there’s still a few more weeks of school plus finals? Tell your friend to really study hard for calc and try to do well on the test and pull a B for semester. After all, calc is a hard class and I was failing myself a month ago and now I’m up to a B-.
