I’m having a hard time writing an addendum to a Fellowship offered through my job explaining the C I got last semester in a math graduate class at the school that I plan to attend full-time if I get the fellowship.

So what I want to say, intelligently, is…

1) I got a C that was a pre-req to the core courses.

2) the class was beyond hard and I still passed, and other grad students were struggling just like I was, so I wasn’t alone.

3) I don’t regret taking the class because it did challenge my mind and made me think more analytically than before, which really prepared me mentally for the first year of graduate school.

4) *** I guess explain what I can do to make sure I don’t get another C, but I don’t know this class is REAL ANALYSIS which is more theoretical than I like, I HATE IT, but it’s a necessary evil, and next semester I’m taking a more applicable type math course, which I LOVE.

Can anyone please help me word this right so that I won’t ruin my chances for this fellowship?

Wow, so you have 1 C in the entirety of school; geez, I have 3 so I must be out of luck to get into any decent grad school.!

I’m sorry if I sound petty about this C, I dont’ mean to.

I’ve already been accepted to a Top 25 Applied Math Program, but I’m applying for a fellowship through my company. So when my supervisor and I went over my application together, and she said that the only “ding” on my application is the 2.0 from my current school, since I only took one class and I got a C in it, so I’m trying to reinforce the application by explaining the grade, which is I was taking this class and I was also a full-time overworked engr and a new job, new school, new environment, new SIDE OF THE COUNTRY, new everything…!

Well, it’s something that I think you’ll have no troubles explaining;

is your post more a question as to how you should go about explaining it in an essay?

Yes, how can I word this in an essay, I just wanted to atttach an addendum just explaining the C.

I thought graduate school had inflated grades. I guess I was mistaken. I “received” a 3.90 GPA my first semester in graduate school. I missed a perfect 4.0 by 1 A-.

Technically, I’m not enrolled in the program yet, I’m just a non-degree student, but I guess the inflation will commence this fall, once I become a full-time PhD student… I hope… or this teacher didn’t get the memo, because the class was dual-numbered meaning it’s an undergrad and a grad course in one, and everyone who were considered in the grad section got ridiculously low grades. After I thought it was just me and I started questioning my abilities in grad school, but when all the rest of the grad students had low grades… I was like ***???
