Explore USC Question!

Hi everyone,

So I was wondering if most people bring their parents to this event? Is it kinda awkward when they are there?

Also, are the parents allowed to leave at any time? Because if my mom comes with me, she is probably going to drive home (hour or two away) and yeah, she can't drive in the dark.

Many people bring their parents to the event (although you won't be alone if your parents can't go. The nice thing is that after the first few sessions, you split up from your parents to explore things on your own. Depending on the schedule each year, you split up completely around four or five, and don't see them again until after your interview is done. My mom definitely left somewhat early to take care of my siblings at home, so that is completely fine.

Hahah so then do the activities force the split? Like how? LOL (:

They herd everyone in to an auditorium and then say "Okay students, we'll take you to meet your hosts, say goodbye to your parents." The parents try to make a break for it and follow, but admissions reps (guards) at the door turn them around as the kids make their escape. The parents don't see them again until the next day.

LOL. Also, the interview happens during the Explore USC session right? Does anybody know of what to expect? Should we dress formal the entire two days we are there?

athenegoddess, you'll have your questions regarding the interview, answered here:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/645669-usc-interview-what-like.html

The beginning of the scholarship information thread has some great information on this type of subject, but here is a general response:

You need to dress nicely for the interview (I wore a skirt and blouse with heels, and felt properly dressed, most guys have on nice pants, a collared shirt and a tie). For the rest of the event, you do not need to dress up- just make sure that you will be comfortable with a lot of walking around. I suggest bringing a change of clothes for after the interview- I know that I wanted to change. Check a weather website to see what the weather will be like when you come- it can vary greatly right now. In the last two weeks there have been highs in the 60s and highs in the 80s. It all depends on the day.

thanks Sequoia! that was really helpful :)

I think the majority of people bring their parents, I brought mine and it seemed like everyone else did, too.

But yes, you will split from them for most of the day, and then around 5pm you'll be assigned to a student (maybe me ^_^, i'm hosting for Explore) who will take y'all to dinner at Parkside or EVK, then we can do whatever you guys wanna do, walk around campus, take pictures by Tommy Trojan imitating his posture..., lol. Pretty much anything. And you'll stay with them overnight in their dorm. (My lucky bunch will be in IRC! Woop woop.)

HAHAh omg, I'm excited! I think it would be awesome mackdacre if you hosted a CC kid LOL. Does USC like give you guys lessons on hosting? like what not to do (get us drunk, etc. lol) I'm super excited (:

I'll be hosting too. We have to go to an information session about it (yup, that includes a don't take them to the row section). It's a fun night.

I'll be hosting, too! I've got the super cool Annenberg kids, though :).

Very dumb question - when you are there overnight are you being evaluated by your host - or can you have a beer without worrying about it - and do you get to go to a party or anything?

Haha ppenguin I know who you are!!!
And LAS kids are TOTALLY cooler.

Josie -- No, your host is not evaluating you.
What "activities" you engage in is up to your host. While I do drink, my guests will not be drinking or partying. We're explicitly forbidden to do that, and it's especially bad given most Explore guests are not only sub-21 but sub-18.

LOL what do you think the odds would be that one of you guys host someone you know on cc? haha

when do we have to register by again?

at least three days before the actual event i believe. however, there are only 175 students allowed per day so rsvp early...

I wanted to go to explore USC so bad... oh well
