Plumbing and Gas work at a restaurant apparently caused an explosion and building collapse in the East Village area of New York City. This is right next to the NYU-Tisch School. The report is that there are 3 people in critical condition and 12 other injuries. There has been no report that any students are injured so far.
While the building explosion and collapse did take place close to the NYU campus, where it took place wasn’t “right next” to the Tisch School.
The main building of the Tisch School is several blocks away at 721 Broadway. The collapsed buildings were located at East 7th street and 2nd Ave. When I was in the area earlier this evening, the area surrounding the collapsed buildings was blocked off by heavy police cordons and patrolling cops.
I heard something on the radio that NYU had/has a dorm on 7thSt and they were relocating the residents of that dorm. They very specifically said they had an emergency plan for relocation and they were putting it into effect.

NYU does have a dorm on East 7th street close by and considering its proximity to the collapsed buildings, the evacuation is prudent considering the preliminary cause was found to be a gas explosion due to possible unauthorized work on the gas lines in the buildings.
As was said, this is not right next to Tisch. There was a dance studio where some Tisch dance majors use the space. That’s the only Tisch connection. The 7th St dorm was closed and will reopen once it is accessible and the necessary areas can be cleaned. Here’s a link to the actual NYU updates for those interested:

Was the nearby building an NYU residence? The news footage I saw depicted an NYU flag flying from a building very near the collapsed structures. In any event, as Cobrat said there are several NYU properties in the immediate area.
