Expos 10

How many people are expected to take this…is it just the bottom echelon or actually not uncommon? Is it required if it is decided you should take it, or just a recommendation, and if it is just a recommendation, how bad would it be to just take EXPOS 20 without 10.

If they recommend you take it, then take it… I think if you place into, you are required to take it, but I’m not sure.

That said, a couple of my friends placed into Expos 10… at first they were disappointed, but in the end, they were VERY, VERY, VERY glad they did… the writing teachers are PHENOMENAL, and the 2 fellow students I knew who took it got insane amounts of personal attention all to improve their writing skills… so, if you get placed into Expos 10, then don’t be disappointed, but instead relish the opportunity to get personalized, individualized writing help from some of the most devoted teachers.

For those who don’t know, all first-years take a writing exam during orientation… those whose writing is deemed needs a little more work, get placed into Expos 10 in the first semester, to be followed by Expos 20 in the second semester… Everyone else takes just one semester of writing, Expos 20, in either semester. The slightly better writers were placed into Expos 20 in the spring, whereas the slightly weaker writers were placed into Expos 20 in the fall… to get more immediate help.

It’s not a big deal, and certainly nothing to be ashamed about.

Its not that I mind taking it, its just you want to take all of these other courses ut you only have 4 slots, and having to do an extra writing class would really mess with fresh seminars and my other plans. Any idea on how many kids take expos 10?

I thought that the Fall/Spring assignments were randomized. Two of my freshman roommates were fantastic writers and got As in Expos 20, whereas me and another roommate was placed into the Spring semester.

xjayz,

you may be correct… i’m not sure… my first-year advisor was the one who told me that, but she still may have been wrong.

I’ve heard the fall/spring rumor too.

The placement test is non-binding, so you end up choosing which class you want. Personally, I couldn’t imagine dealing with two semesters of expos, but that’s just me…

I loved my Expos class. Then again, the workload was SIGNIFICANTLY easier than the other Expos sections. I got my third choice, but in the end, I was so happy I got it. All Expos classes require you to write three essays. The page-length requirement is longer as you go on.

Several of my friends had piles of reading to do every night, where my Expos class (it’s not offered anymore, the preceptor had to leave due to Harvard’s policy for non-tenure track faculty) had none. We read a poem for our first essay, watched two movies (which were super interesting) for the second, and did our own research for the third.

Sure, Expos was my lowest grade last semester, but I learned most from the class. I feel like my writing did improve (not drastically, but I definitely know what to look for in college writing). In all, Expos is a varied experience - some people love it, some people hate it, but we all have to get through it!

When do you find out what Expos class you’re taking? Do you find out before or after shopping period? I’m trying to put together a rough schedule for the fall semester and I’m not sure whether I should work the schedule around the Expos class or not.

http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~expos/calendar.html

Don’t plan your schedule so rigidly! Shopping period is there for a reason… you might not find out about this amazing class until a few days before study cards are due, so be flexible!

Oh, I definitely plan on taking advantage of shopping period. I’ve been checking out the CUE guide and seeing what kind of classes pique my interest, but there are so many classes I like whose meeting times conflict with one another! It sucks that there’s only room for 4 classes in the schedule :frowning: I guess most everyone feels that way though, lol

Thanks a lot for the calendar! It was very helpful.

m_c: Remember to speak to your Peer Advising Fellow! From your facebook, it seems like you have Victoria! She’s wonderful.

Could you opt into it voluntarily?

Probably not.

xjayz, have you heard of any other expos sections that are more pleasant than most?
