Exracurriculars - how many hours needed for UCLA?

For those of you who have been accepted into UCLA, I was curious as to how many hours of ECs as a whole, as well as how many hours of leadership positions and volunteer work were ON your UC application. (I emphasize the “on” because I know you can only put a maximum of 5 areas of involvement for work, ECs, awards, volunteer work, etc)

If you could list each EC and the amount of time you spent on it, that would be great…

I just wanted to get a better understanding of everyone’s ECs, because I feel like there will be some students (including myself) that has done a lot of extracurricular activities in a lot of different areas for only a few hours, which is deceptive because it looks as if they are really involved outside of school, but have technically done less than those who have focused on a few ECs with more hours.

Especially in those UCLA Acceptance threads, I wish they were more in-depth because students who list their ECs never really go into how much time they’ve spent on them, and it’s hard to tell whether the “accepted” student has many ECs but didn’t spend many hours on them, or whether they truly spent numerous hours on each EC they listed on the application.

Thanks.

I was accepted 2011, this is what I remember;

 • several years as a summer library volunteer that helped with the children’s reading program, 15-20 hours/week over summer break
 • Kids Voting branch of my county as board member (one year, had monthly meetings that were a few hours as well as various voter drives, caucuses, etc it was in 2008 so we had lots of events), also Civics Club which was our school’s KV branch that met weekly and created presentations about local ballot issues, so 1-2 hours/week
 • co editor of literary magazine, 2-3 hours/week
 • Interact Club, treasurer, meetings + board meetings + actual events averaged 3-4 hours/week for three years
 • National Honor Society, had meetings once a month + a couple of yearly events, minimal time commitment
 • Knowledge Bowl - practice was 1 hour/week, then meets were almost every weekend for a few months + regionals and state
 • United Way board member of financial/budgeting group, met once/month for a few hours then we had scattered events throughout the year, minimal time commitment

Overall Interact Club, the library, and Kbowl were the things I was most involved in throughout high school, and those were the things I put the most hours into and had the most fun/interest in.
