Extended-wear contact lenses

DS has started to try out the extended-wear contact lenses for 3 days now. He can wear them for 6 days and nights straight, then should take them out for a rest, and starts a fresh pair after 30 days. He would try the Biofinity Toric and Air Optix Toric to see which one works better for him.

Has anyone had experiences wearing the extended-wear contact lenses? Do you prefer them over the non-extended-wear ones?

I think my D has Air Optix night & Day, & I have Biomedics. We always take them out at night instead of sleeping in them.
I believe the extended wear lenses are more permeable, and so easier on your eyes, but just because of all the stuff that gets in your eyes & can scratch your cornea, I wouldn’t sleep in them unless absolutely necessary.

My husband use to wear them but got constant eye infections. My eye doctor doesn’t recommend sleeping in them. Even though they have gotten much better since they originally came out, sleeping in contacts still put you at higher risk for infections and abrasions.

My eye doctor has a great saying, ‘when in doubt, take them out.’ In other words, tell your son to never leave in contacts that are irritating his eye(s).

I have been wearing extended wear contacts of some sort for over 30 years. As long as I take them out on time I have had no problems. If they feel uncomfortable for some reason, dryness, debris, etc. then I have learned to take them out right away. I LOVE them!

I had them for about 20 years. My eyes can’t tolerate them now as my eyes have become more dry with age. I miss them SO much. The sheer glory of being able to see the clock when you wake up in the middle of the night is worth it. I wore them every night and took them out every two weeks. They make them more permeable and safe than they did when when they first came out.

Son has been wearing contacts since he was 9 years old (25 now). The only time he ever had an issue was when he tried wearing extended lenses for multiple days without removing them. He ended up with a very bad corneal infection.

He currently wears O2 Optix but takes them out before bed. He likes the flexibility such as if he spends the night somewhere, he can sleep in them. Other then sleeping in them for a night, his doctor doesn’t recommend keeping them in for an extended length of time (even though the makers of the product say you can).

Same experience as many above. Experienced many eye infections when I tried years ago to go for days with them in and my vision deteriorated. Dr. said my eyes were drying out wearing them. So, take them out nightly (and vision improved!). I can sleep in them if need be, but eyes just feel better with a nightly break from the contacts.

I wear Accuvue Oasis, which are extended wear, but like others above, my eye doctor tells me to take them out at night. Only time I wear them to sleep is when I’m camping, overnight flight or in another situation (3rd world country) where it’s more sanitary to leave them in. He wants me to use a new pair every 2 weeks, but I usually stretch it to 3 weeks and know when they need to go. I use Target brand rewetting drops as soon as I wake up and the itchy feeling is gone in a few minutes.

I’ve been wearing the Ciba Air Optix for about 10 years (I think) and leave them in for a month with maybe 1 or 2 cleanings during the month. No problems. Daughter has had them for about a year and also hasn’t had any problems. I can’t even see the bedside clock without them,
