Not that I’m hoping anyone is getting "D"s or "F"s, but I did want to make students aware that Indiana has a special grading policy that is not well-known or communicated.

The extended-X grading policy allows a student who receives a “D”, a “F” or even a “C” or “B” to retake the class in an effort to improve upon their first grade and have the previous grade removed from the computation of their GPA, though not removed from their record.

The only rule is that the student must not have yet completed 45 units of college credit (including both at Indiana and all other colleges).

Here is the policy:

This is information primarily for any freshman that is really worried about a particular grade or two this semester–in other words, don’t worry–you can retake the class or classes and get the first grade removed.
