I received a pretty good FA offer from my school, but ideally I need to secure another $5,000. I made the mistake of not researching external scholarships much, hoping the school would cover my need. Now most deadlines for fall 2017 have passed, and I wonder what my chances are of finding the money this late. It’s an important factor in my decision to commit. What are the prospects, realistically?
There’s websites like “fastweb” that give you options for applying to scholarships. I can’t really speak to its validity but it seems to help some people.
I am not aware of any scholarships that you can apply for at this late date. Even if you find some, those scholarships may just end up reducing the aid provided by your school, so check the policy there to see how they would treat that.
Is the FA offer that you are looking to supplement need-based, merit or a combination? Typically, outside scholarships will reduce need-based aid received on a dollar-for-dollar basis because, surprise, the receipt of an outside scholarship reduces your need for financial assistance from the school. In many cases an outside scholarship will first reduce loan and work study assistance (if offered) before grant assistance is reduced.

Ask your school counselor. Maybe there are some smaller local scholarships with deadlines that haven’t passed.

Good advice, but I live in a foreign country, so everyone around me is pretty clueless about this stuff. I have to find all the info online.

Are you doing workstudy already?

I have been offered that as part of my aid.

It is a combination. I have been told that as long as the external aid does not exceed the difference between total FA and cost of attendance, I should be fine. $5,000 would not have an impact (I hope, if I understand it right).
Well…if you live outside of the country…then perhaps, there is nothing available for you.
Some employers give scholarships to kids of employees. Any chance that is a possibility?
Even living outside the country…does your school have school counselors? Any chance there are awards you can apply for, where you live…that you can use here.
Many local and outside scholarship require citizenship. I was surprised to learn that when looking at scholarships. One even required the recipient to be 18, and my daughter wasn’t. There were a lot in our area for children of military personnel, for service groups like the Elks, American Legion, etc. There were a few for talents like photography and art, but all very small.
I think your best option at this time is to work for the money you need.

No, we don’t have school counselors. Uni is mostly free here (Europe), but there are some award programs for kids going to study in foreign countries. This mostly applies to those seeking masters degrees, however. Also, I have US citizenship, so I don’t really count as an international student by some standards, which can cause problems with eligibility for them.
