Extra curriculars for sophmore year

I’m a rising freshmen at time and I realize that I’m nearing the college admissions process. I’ve heard that taking an interest at something you really love can show admission officers devotion and passion.

Any suggestions what to join?

What should i join?

How many clubs should I be in? (already in freshmen mathteam)

How many clubs should i additionally join?

Any comments and suggestions are appreciated Thank you!!!

“I’ve heard that taking an interest at something you really love”

Part of that is to develop the self reflection and creativity to discover what it is. Not ape someone else’s list. Is this how you expect to find a spouse one day?

You’re asking strangers to suggest to you a list of things you love? Sounds bizarre, no? Because it is.

The only hope you have of “showing” passion and devotion is to actually be passionate and devoted. No shortcuts. It’s not a switch to be flipped. And rarely do high school students achieve this level of depth.

“Rising freshman” would mean that you are now an 8th grader.

As stated above, we cannot tell you what to love. There is no magic recipe that says “join this particular club or do that particular activity” to impress a college. School admissions people want to know who you are, and what you can contibute to the school. The best way to do that is to get involved with something you believe in and/or enjoy, and contribute significantly.

As to number of activities, most school adcoms seem to prefer depth rather than breadth. In other words, better to show leadership in a group and a lot of time attention to one or a few activities/clubs, than just showing up at a whole bunch of different things.

Idealistic response: Only do ECs that you are interested in/good at/enjoy

Pragmatic response: Only do a couple but be in leadership position. Don’t be a scattershot joiner.

just join clubs, get involved, see what you like, and stick with it. you’re asking for an easy fix.
it’s not about which clubs or how many clubs, it’s about how dedicated you are to your ECs. so go and find something interesting to do
