Extra Curriculars

I went to the information session and it said that Duke really doesn’t like it when a student who was only in 2 clubs for 3 years randomly joins 10 their senior year. But what if i join 3 more junior year?

I have steadily increased amount of clubs i have done thourought the years
Freshman: soccer
Sophmore: soccer, xc, and yearbook
junior: soccer, xc, yearbook, environmental club, women’s club, and global connections

does that look like i’m only adding them for colleges? because i actually am interested in joining these clubs, but i don’t want Duke to think that i’m only doing it to get into tehir college

You can certainly head off any doubts by asking yourself some questions about why you joined those clubs.

For instance, why did you join those clubs? Were there any personal connections for joining global connections or women’s club? Can you demonstrate in a tangible way to the admissions officer your interest and enthusiasm for these clubs? Such demonstrations can include talking about it in your essay, at your interview, showing a level of participation that would require effort and time, maybe even getting recommendations from someone you’ve worked with in connection to these clubs.

Basically, you want to show that joining these activities benefited you, not just your resume.

I agree with SBR. Also if you want to show Duke that you didn’t join the clubs for fun, you should show leadership in the club and dedication (maybe start a project for environmental club).

If your gonna be active and involved in the clubs then its perfectly fine and will look good on your application. Just being a member is somewhat meaningless.
