Extra Transfer Chances for Nervous Applicant!

College: Foothill College

GPA: 3.27 (3.30 by end of Fall)

Units: 120 quarter units of 2-year and 4-year transferable college coursework.

Applying to: UCSD, UCI, UCD, UCR, UCSB

Major:
UCSD - International Studies-Political Science
UCI - International Studies
UCD - International Relations
UCR - Global Studies
UCSB - Global Studies

IGETC: YES

TAG: NO

PRE-REQ: Completed all the pre-reqs for UCI, UCD, UCR. UCSD had none listed and UCSB is about 70% complete. UCSB though does not require entire completion of per-reqs to be admitted.

Extra Curriculars:
Educational prep Programs: 2 quarters of Pass the Torch (tutoring) Leadership Training
Volunteer: Elementary School Annex 20 hours
Work Experience: Pass the torch team leader (tutor) for two quarters
Awards and Honors: Deans List 6/2011, High Academic Honors 12/2006

Personal Statement: Pretty good!

P.S.: I went to Cal Poly SLO first quarter of college after graduating high school and withdrew after first quarter because I didn’t like it. (Didn’t have AP so don’t worry about that. I made the choice myself). I believe that only one of the courses that I took that quarter could be transferred to a UC because the rest were major courses that they had AUTOMATICALLY signed me up for in order to get students out after four years. (Damn SLOs policy on choosing a major right in the first year coming in…)

Wow, all these views and no responses? Here, I’ll chance you.

With your credentials, I think you stand a good chance of getting into Santa Barbara, Irvine, Davis, and Riverside. However, UCSD might be a little bit of a stretch, considering your GPA. If your personal statement is a good as you say it is, and you have all the pre-reqs done, then your chances go up a little bit.

Good luck!

bumpbumpbump

UCSD is iffy; they tend to go for higher GPAs. I don’t know how it goes for your major, though. I’d reckon UCR you’re in, and you’ve got a good shot with UCSB, UCD, and UCI…but that’s just my guess.

The 120 units is what you will have at the end of spring, not currently, right? 135+ puts you in senior standing. So careful of that…

UCR you’re definitely in! UCI, UCD, and UCSB possible! UCSD will probably be difficult to get in, but not impossible! my friend got in with a 3.1 in computer science last year!

@newsoul: i’ll have 116 units at CC by the end of fall qtr. what happens if i exceed 135units?

@newsoul I will have 120 TRANSFERRABLE quarter units by the end of Spring 2012.

@MrMustache 135+ puts you into senior standing, but I dont think people who have been in CCC the entire time have to worry about that. Just folk like me who have attended both 4-year and 2-year universities.

UCSD only cares about numbers.

And you can never get to senior standing with CC units only. Where do you people get such false information from.

UCSD - International Studies-Political Science
[A reach, try to get 3.3 3.4+ u will have a decent chance to get in. They are strongly advice you to complete many prereq, but if u did, u will have a great shot]

UCI - International Studies

""" ====International Studies, B.A.====
This major does not require completion of prerequisites for admission as a

transfer student.

International Studies majors are also required to complete some form of
international study experience either abroad or through a domestic internship
for a minimum of one quarter. An honors program in International Studies is
available.""""
[Have u done any domestic internship? This major does not require you to finish all the prereq since it’s not selective. I would say you are in about 75%, also Your gpa pretty much fit with UCI non impacted major]

UCD - International Relations
“”"Special Advising Note:

Transfer students are strongly advised to complete as many preparatory
courses as possible for their major before enrolling at UC Davis.
Preparing well for the major helps students move efficiently toward
graduation.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION:

Transfer students MUST complete the following required courses or courses listed
as comparable to them for this selective major by the end of spring term prior
to fall enrollment, with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 for the course group.
It is recommended that for any of these courses that are completed by the time
of application, the GPA for the group be 3.00 or higher, and that this GPA be
maintained through the transfer academic update filing period. Courses must be
taken for a letter grade, with no grade less than C:

Economics 1A or Anthropology 2
Economics 1B;
History 4C or History 10C;
International Relations 1 or Political Science 3;
Statistics 13 or Sociology 46B

To be a competitive applicant, you must earn an overall transfer GPA of 2.80 or
higher.

Transfer students must also meet UC transfer admission requirements. For details
return to the previous screen. Click on, “UC Transfer Admissions Eligibility
Courses” and then select a UC transfer admissions eligibility area. UC Davis
requires that students complete the minimum transfer admission requirements by
the end of spring term prior to fall enrollment."""

[As you can see, this major is selective at UCD, I would say a REACH, but a low you. I think you have a decent chance. Compare to UCI, UCD is harder to get in.] Your chance for UCSD and UCD are almost equal. :D

UCR - Global Studies
nah in for sure, I don’t need to do any research for this. Just leave UCR out of the way next time.

UCSB - Global Studies
70%

I think if you have a 3.2, you should worry. 3.3…nothing to worry about.

a major with required courses to transfer in addition to math/english must be a serious challenge for some transfer students.

I couldn’t imagine a picking a major that required classes outside of IGETC. a lot of community colleges don’t even have the “suggested” pre-req classes because of budget cuts.

And you can never get to senior standing with CC units only. Where do you people get such false information from.

@AcousticKitty I went to Cal Poly SLO, which isn’t a CC. I got some units from there too, hence my worry. 0.0 Maybe i’m also mixing together Senior Standing, and just not being accepted due to a unit limit of 4-year / 2-year credit.

@FerrarixD - I haven’t done any domestic internship but I will do a study abroad program in Spring 2013 in Japan! For UCD, I also have completed all those requirements listed, and I’m above 2.8 so wouldn’t I be MORE than a competitive applicant? hahaha (that’s such a low GPA to be competitive, i’m surprised) Thanks for your chancing too.

that is the MINIMUM LOL. Let set an example.
Business admin at UCR minimum 2.5.
do you think a gpa of 2.8 2.9 or even 3.0 can get in? I don’t think so. lol.
Always have .5 more than the minimum to ensure ur chance. Of course finished prereq is a big advantage for you, pretty much call it a chance. Not 100% atleast 50 50  I can’t give u a guarantee chance for UCD haha, its quite a some mid tier UC, not like UCR and UCM :D.

Sorry my bad! Didn’t know.

Ok thank you Ferrari, and Acoustic. I appreciate it. I hope I get into one of my main three though. (UCI,UCD,UCSD). I applied to UCSB for better chances, and UCR as an ultimate fall-back. I’ll stay hopeful. I’m so anxious too!!! Aghh.

Oh and I forgot to ask – Anyways, I know that impacted majors are majors that a lot of people want to do, but does that also mean that their program at the school is good? I heard UCSD has a really good International Studies program…like top 10 in the US for public schools. I wonder how UCD ranks since it’s impacted…

No problem. Very good question. I’d say yes and no. UCSD and UCLA both have bio A’s an impacted major. Yes that means that the schools sure do have a good bio programs. But there are non impacted majors such as English or Poli Sci at UCSB that won’t be impacted…but are pretty good programs…just ranked…you know?

So I guess if a major is impacted, it’s strong expanding because of how superior the program is.

why is it you guys want to be a bio/chem major? there are numerous other paths to med school…

Exactly. That’s why I’m majoring in Sociology and going to med school with that.

^ Hey! Poly Sci > Dental School over here!

You should have a HIGH MCAT then with that major!

LOL MCAT and major have nothing to do with one another  if you have a good foundation and understanding in your PRE-med courses, you’re good. Awesome. Poli Sci ad dental. You go girl!
