I am having a difficult time finding some extracurricular activities.
I am a fulltime student and I am always busy with taking care of my seven year old brother and dealing with unstable parents. I am a French major.
The things I have thought are volunteering with the deaf or blind.
Volunteer in a soup kitchen.
Maybe a club at the CC I attend or volunteer at the Alliance Française (French Alliance)
Be active in helping my synagogue.
They’re all valid. To your second question, Remember though colleges are putting together a well rounded class full of spikey or pointy kids with expertise each in their own area, not well rounded students. Your ECs want to tell a story and fit with the rest of your application. But yes, taking care of younger brother is definitely worth mentioning as it shows you take on responsibility and can be trusted and will likely be a good member of any community.
Admissions in the US is difficult to predict. However, I think that taking care of your seven year old brother is an EC. Volunteering at the Alliance Francaise or a soup kitchen is also. My understanding is that ECs are only critical for the very top ranked super selective schools.
Of course, as a French major another option would be to consider schools in Canada, which won’t care much about ECs. I think that U. of Ottawa gives a tuition break for bilingual students (U.Ottawa is officially a bilingual university).
I do wonder however what a person does if they graduate university as a French major. Given that that I grew up in Montreal, at one point I knew a LOT of people who were fluently bilingual in English and French.
Also I am in California so I am specifically applying to UCLA, Berkeley, Irvine and Davis in that order.
I thought of going with education(most likely my top choice),law, international relations/diplomacy or perhaps dentistry.
