ExtraCurricular question

I’m going to be a junior this upcoming school year. My two primary passions/focuses are journalism (editor of school paper 06-07, Editor in Chief 07-08) and community service (Key Club president [planning some long-term service projects, possibly raising enough money to fund a house in Mexico for Habitat for Humanity] and since sophomore year, I’ve tutored/mentored children with low-family income).

With that in mind, what would be the best project for me to do next summer, before senior year? I’m trying to decide between:

 1. applying for an intership at a major newspaper publication (i.e. LA times, since I’m a resident of Southern California)/broadcast corporation (i.e. NBC, CBS etc)

or

Fundraising money for a few Key Club members and I to culminate our volunteer-abroad work in Mexico (one site offers a 2 week program for around $1100) , where we would most likely work in an orphangage/teaching English to the children. After that, I plan to intern there, since one program offers a journalism internship, where I’d be able to immerse myself in the culture, and more importantly, the experience of an internship.

I hope that since the second option requires our Key Club to actively fundraise and dedicate ourselves to volunteering abroad and service (especially since we focus on service during the school year), so it doesn’t just seem like we did it just for college apps. The second option does combine my two passions, while the first one, in some ways, is more “eminent” since it’ll be with a well-known publication.

What do you guys think I should choose? Any help and insight is much appreciated! :)

I think you should do the second option, basically for the same reason you stated above, “the second option does combine [your] two passions”.
