Extracurriculars on application

Is the extracurricular portion of the online application as generic as it seems or am I missing something? It seems like it should say something more than “Athletics”.

"The information you have provided on your application indicates periods of time when you were not enrolled in either a secondary or post-secondary institution:

Explain all time from your completion of high school until you plan to enroll at IU

List each activity separately
Include the dates you were involved with the activity
For example, “Librarian’s assistant from January 2006 until May 2006.”
Do not use any of the following characters: ^ , % " < > @ # $ * + { } ( ) ; :"

Does this mean they want me to explain my extracurriculars or explain a gap in my education?

Perhaps you typo-ed your graduation date, “The information you have provided on your application indicates…” I had a gap year and my version of the application required that section.

There should be a separate section for extracurricular activities in a fill-in-the-blank/drop down menu format that will include generic categories such as “Honor Society”.

“As part of the application, we offer students the option to provide a summary of their important extracurricular activities. This is not required. Please select any activities you have been significantly involved in, the highest office or leadership position you held in the organization (if applicable), and the years you have participated in the activity. If you have participated in more than one organization of a particular type (ie multiple cultural organizations), select the “Other” category, listing the name of the organization and recording your involvement as noted above.”

Hope this helps.
