Extremely worried about college admissions... Please help.

I am looking at UoA’s honors college and the Barret’s Honors college. I am also wondering some other good options for a business degree (I desire to double or triple major.)

Please note that I am currently taking the hardest course load possible.

I went to a day school (ranked number 1 day school in the Southwest) for 2 years of high school. Freshman and sophomore year. I was extremely unhappy there and my grades suffered as a result. All classes there are considered “honors”, even though they are much harder.

Freshman Year: I took 6 classes. I received 2 Ds, 5 Cs, 3 Bs, and 2 As. Sophomore year, I took 6 classes first semester and then dropped advanced photography second semester due to an unfair teacher that harassed the male students. I received 4 Bs and 2 Cs first semester and 3 Bs and 2 Cs second semester.

I now switched to a public school where I am taking the IB Program. I currently have 3 As, 2 Bs, and 1 C. I can probably raise one of the Bs to an A and one of the Cs to a B. I received a 205 on my PSAT sophomore year, but I did not feel I did well this year. I was feeling horrible on the day I took it.

My extracurriculars include the following:
Freshman Year: Ultimate Frisbee Club (Every Friday), SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving), The Radical (Math Newspaper), B’nai Tzedek (Jewish Youth Philanthropy Organization with 200 kids.)
Sophomore Year: All of the clubs from Freshman year and I joined a Jewish Youth Organization called BBYO. I am now on the board for my chapter as the treasurer and secretary.
Junior Year: DECA (Business Organization. I am confident I can place top 3 in the state and do well at nationals. I am currently writing a 30 page international business plan), B’nai Tzedek (I am now on board for it and I was elected to the executive board as in charge of publicity), Invisible Children (I go on occassion. Not that involved.), Math Olympiad (I go on occassion. Not that involved.), Tutoring (For free.)
Senior Year: I will hopefully be doing the extracurriculars that I am currently doing along with National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. I couldn’t join those this year because my GPA was not a 3.5. :/

I have been taking practice SAT tests. I receive on average 750 on Math, 700 on Writing, and 580 on Reading (hate it.)

I really enjoy math and business, along with economics.

Please let me know about my chances guys, thanks a lot. Please also give me some more universities to look into. I used to have dreams of Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth, Brown, Tufts University, Brandeis University, but I figure those dreams were screwed up Freshman and Sophomore year. :(

And junior year… Those schools are looking for IB diploma candidates with all A’s. Even 1 C in IB is pretty much inexcusable at top universities and even second-tier schools. I don’t think you have any chance at an honors college thats part of any major university in the USA. I think your EC’s are weak as well. I think you should be concentrating on getting in to some big universities because you don’t have much of a shot anywhere else

Please note that I am an in-state student for ASU and UoA…

Also, I said I HAD dreams. I am not looking to apply to those anymore, with the exception of Tufts or Brandeis possibly.

And I feel my SAT scores are being relatively strong currently?

please help me out.

^^^that was harsh :(

Anyway. I would suggest retaking the SAT to raise that CR score. There’s such a big discrepancy between your CR and Writing that it seems that you should be able to raise your CR to at least 600+. So study, and try to retake. 700+ in CR will help your chances significantly. Secondly, RAISE YOUR GRADES. I know that’s easier said than done, but junior year is most important. If you can get your grades up to As and 1-2 Bs then you’ll be in much better shape. As you may or may not know, some colleges don’t even look at freshmen year grades, so if you can get your grades up now and keep them up through senior year, you’ll only have 10th grade grades bringing you down. Your DECA EC sounds excellent - focus on that on your essay and you’ll be a strong contender at Tufts and Brandeis. Good luck.

Thank you very much.

I am also hoping to become on board of our DECA chapter next year as well. I just joined this year because it was a new school and I really found I had a large passion for business. I had been following and even investing a little bit in the stock market for a couple of years, along with following the business world. My old school was a private school where the kids had “let’s save the world” clubs. That does interest me and the board for B’nai Tzedek I am on is allocating 13,000 dollars this year, but I am more interested in the business world. I am working hard to raise my grades currently. I am doing quite well on the group 4 project (Part of the IB Diploma, 10% of our Bio Grade) and I think I can raise my English grade up. I am also trying to raise my history grade to an A. The problem is our teacher loves to give pop quizzes on extremely random material. We are studying Canada currently. An example is we had a chapter due. I knew the reading extremely well. He gave us a pop quiz telling us to locate 5 places in our reading and said “We should have looked it up while reading.” Lovely 0/20 for a large majority of the IB kids. A lot of crap such as that happens.

Please note that I have not taken the SAT yet as well. I have only done practice tests. I am taking it in January. I am also taking the ACT in February.

May you please chance me for the UoA honors and ASU barret’s honors as well? I am quite interested in those due to both schools having decent business schools and lots of my friends going there probably. I am interested in Tufts because my dad was an alumni of the dental school and I liked their campus. Brandeis I am interested in because of the large Jewish population there. I think my involvement in the Jewish community would especially help me at Brandeis. An economics major at Tufts or Brandeis would interest me.

I was also looking at future business leader’s of America’s website. Would it be benefitial of me to start that as a club?

Are there any other good business schools to look into with my portfolio? I have not done a lot of research yet.

TBH I don’t know much about the others (ASU and UofA), which is why I left them out. I don’t know much about business schools either (I’m more of an engineering person myself), sooooo yeah. Sorry I can’t be more helpful. :(

Check out the University of Denver–a good number of BBYO kids are there.

Hmm, thanks anyways.

University of Denver. Is that related to University of Colorado at Boulder? I was interested in that because it offers IB kids a lot of credits.

I am curious as to which private high school you think is number one in the Southwest US; typically that is Albuquerque Academy in New Mexico (as it boasts the largest endowment of any private day school in the country–now well ahead of the Westminster Schools in Atlanta) or the United World College (all boarding) also located in New Mexico.
The Univ. of Denver is a private university which is not affiliated with the Univ. of Colorado in Boulder.
Brandeis is still a strong possibility for you due to geographical diversity considerations. The Ivy League schools are not a realistic choice for you at this time.

Phoenix Country Day School.

They have bragged about being number 1 in the Southwest, I am not sure on the legitimacy on it. I do know that they send around a sixth of their graduating class to ivy league schools. The school was too pretentious and too long of a drive for me. Not to mention I did not get along with most of the kids. Both of those combined to make for a bad GPA and an unhappy experience there.

I realize the ivy league schools are not a realistic choice at this time. Honestly, I am kind of more interested in UoA Honors and ASU Barret’s Honors. It will save me a lot for tuition because I want to go to graduate school.

How hard is NYU to get into?

Please help.

NYU is competitive as it admits about one third of all applicants with SATs ranging from the 1100’s to 1500/1600, and the mid-range SATs of 1240-1430 on the 1600 scale although an Arizona applicant should enjoy a slightly less competitive admissions process. NYU, however, does not have a traditional campus as it is located in the super urbanized Manhatten section of New York City. Admissions to the Stern School of Business is tougher & admission to the Tisch School of the Arts may require an audition.

I really dont think you should start an FBLA.

As a member/former FBLA officer, FBLA takes a lot of time and effort. Additionally, colleges would believe that you are just trying to gorge on EC’s.

I also think your EC’s are fine.

@ Supertme…that was really harsh. Are you trying to be really mean on purpose? If so, you’ve succeeded. Give the kid some hope.

All right, thanks.

I am not really looking into FBLA to gorge on ECs. I am actually interested in it because I wish to get into business.

Thanks for the help guys.

So you think I can get into UoA Honors and ASU Honors?
