Facebook Is Still Overwhelmingly White, Asian And Male

Article notes statistics on employees and top brass. So will this revelation (including on campus FB groups) change the configuration?

There aren’t many women and minorities in CS which is necessary for the tech job. The non-tech demographics look fairly representative at a glance as the population in California who has a Bachelor’s Degree.

What should the demographics be?

Not for a few years. The feeder crop of CS grads won’t be entry level for a few more years yet. Then the percentages can go up to where they should be, about 1% higher.

haha.

Usually when a segment gets called out they try to over-correct in the short term to be politically correct. Thus, graduates who might not 100% fit the mold might briefly get a better shot this next year or so - or not necessarily, which is why I asked. I think women have been having a bit more of any opening these last few years. So it could bode well for my daughter.

Setting up tech groups on campuses is at least an attempt at reaching out beyond the obvious, and acknowledging some shortcomings.

And @Vladenschlutte you are correct in terms of Asian and white males dominating in terms of coding, but is there truly a lack of other genders or ethnic groups? Maybe so.

oh, facebook employees. I thought you were talking about users, and I was thinking that there are plenty of women on facebook!

Same as any other tech. MSFT is predominantly male - Indian and Asian… no special analysis needed - just run on the river trail in Redmond.

I don’t know but I’ve heard Google treat women really well unlike other tech companies, especially the small startups.

If that demographic is the one that is getting the CS degrees and/or skills for that particular job, then that demographic is the one that will be hired. Should they hire people that are not interested in getting the education and training, because of their sex or the color of their skin? When it comes down to it, to get a job with a company like Facebook, you need to have the technical skills. I am pretty dang certain that women and minorities who have the skills are well sought after, in this occupation.

It’s not easy, plenty of women get rejected too. My daughter and her friend were rejected at a few interviews, this site makes it seems like they are getting jobs easily like candies. Not that way in real life. They both have good to high GPA from a decent CS school.

I totally agree, DrGoogle! That’s why I’m always annoyed when people start talking about quotas. Okay, it may help you get in the door, but it sure as heck isn’t going to get you the job, especially in something like tech. And then when they get the job, they feel they have to prove themselves in ways that others don’t, just so others don’t think they got there because they are female.

Ugh, I remember when I interviewed with United. Me and a group of about 20 white guys. Everyone introducing themselves and telling what their qualifications were. Giving me the snake eye, because obviously, I must have been called for the interview because I was female. I was the most qualified person in the room and it gave me some satisfaction. However, I still didn’t get the job, but I thank my lucky stars for that one!!

My name is gender neutral because it’s a foreign name, people can’t tell it’s a male or female. I was slightly pleased when one caller expressed that he was surprised that I was female. So my resume must have been impressived.

Cool! If you don’t mind me asking (and don’t put it on here if you’re uncomfortable), what exactly do you do? I know you’re in tech, but not sure beyond that.

I’m an engineer.

Hmm, engineer can cover a lot of ground, but that’s good enough for me!

Why did this thread get moved to Elections and Politics? I’m on my phone so maybe I am missing something. I’m looking over the Elections and Politics thread and it seems kind of all over the map, like Flip This House #4, and Women’s World Cup, and What Kind of Phone Should I Buy for My Kid.

I just want to make sure I post in the correct spot and Elections and Politics never would have occurred to me.

It’s in the Parents Cafe. Election & Politics isn’t a working spot anymore.

Oh, thx. So I guess the iPhone is showing something weird.

“It’s in the Parents Cafe. Election & Politics isn’t a working spot anymore”

It’s unfortunate, but apparently people had a hard time behaving themselves. (not including myself in that comment, of course :D)

It’s only a problem if equally qualified women and non-whites / Asians are being turned down at higher rates. For all you know, their hiring fairly represents the applicant pool.

White male is becoming minority fast. Women and minority will become majority of population soon. If one can, they should make workplace comfortable for women and minorities. There may be many talented women and minorities who just don’t see tech as their thing because it’s so dominated by male and asian.
