Has anybody used this for selling instead of Craigslist! My son has, and he sold furniture fast! However, it shows your name and profile, etc. I’m private, but it still shows. Seems sort of creepy. I might stick with Craigslist, as that’s anonymous until the transact is going to be completed. Even then they just have an address. Just wondering if that is a concern of others.
I’ve bought two things on it - a calculator and a Lazy Boy chair. Worked great! If I have anything to sell, I will probably try it.
I have bought and sold. They will only see what your privacy settings allow any “stranger” to see. I personally like FBM better because I can creep on anyone selling or buying and find out a little more about them (if their settings allow) before meeting, buying, etc.
I’m a cautious person but I don’t go hogwild about FB worries. FB neighborhood selling groups are good too. I have sold things in a matter of minutes.
I guess if there is a creeper out there, they can find out where you live by your name. Did you think of that, or does it not bother you? Am I worrying irrationally?
I think it’s creepier meeting someone you have NO IDEA what they look like or totally no idea who they are!
I don’t worry about people knowing where I live. Really, why would 99% of the population care? The other 1% will find someone if they want to.
Me buying or selling a piece of furniture isn’t probably going to prompt anyone on FB to want to check me out at home. Not that 99% of the population.
I lock my car, my house, set alarms and LIVE!
I have bougt and sold, and generally give the option of meeting in a public neutral place or doing a “porch pickup” where nobody has to interact.Never had a bad experience. I would probably not ever advise people to enter someone else’s home, or let them enter yours, but if they have wedding things I need, you bet I’m gonna buy them
I also belong to a BuyNothing group, which is awesome too. But you need to use common sense.
Just don’t assume you’re at the right house if nobody answers the door!! I made that mistake and the homeowner was not happy, rightfully so. I was just sure I was at the right place! Yikes.
Have sold lots of things both in a neighborhood buy/sell group and Marketplace. Marketplace is much more annoying. It’s so easy for a buyer to click on one button to send you a message “Is this still available”? so you’re constantly answering yes.
You have to be ready for folks on FBM to not show up too. “my car broke down”, “I’m too busy, can I come a week from Saturday?” Kind of annoying but got rid of lots of stuff!
I would avoid having people pick up at my house unless the item was a large piece that was hard to haul. At that point I would get it outside at least.
The parking lot at our town police station is a popular meeting spot for such transactions. The police station encourages the practice.
@conmama - you don’t have to have your real name on FB. You can use your first name and middle name if you wish, so no one can doxx you. My photo is also a photo of my dog, lol. Actually, my old dog who has since died, lololol.
Just be sure about your FB name because they only let you change your name every 6 months.
I recently sold golf clubs on marketplace and my son sold a boat motor. I also found a tenant for a condo we take care of for my mom. I found it super easy. For the clubs I met the buyer at a local hardware store. When it came to the condo we had enough interaction before the meeting that I wasn’t concerned (she was local and we knew mutual people).
I found MP super easy. The only downside is that I got people inquiring with lot’s of questions who weren’t serious buyers. I find you have to weed them out.
I’ve bought and sold on marketplace and a local selling wall. I don’t use my real name on FB, that hasn’t been a problem. We do meet in a public place to exchange things, or if someone must come to my house or I to theirs I bring a buddy.
Police station parking lot is a great idea @doschicos !
My son has sold a few things on FB marketplace and I had to do the exchange because he was away at school. Our police station actually has a “safe trade spot” that is under camera surveillance at all times. It is the only place I will go to sell or pick up. The only exception was when I sold the appliances from a condo my parents bought before we started a complete renovation. I turned down someone who seemed a little scary and chose to sell to a woman after I checked out her profile on FB. I also had other people with me when she came with her husband to pick up.
I sold old bicycles and outdoor furniture. (The outdoor furniture ended up getting bought by the woman two doors away - after she saw it on facebook). I have had no luck with things like china and silverware.
I do see people selling things that are ridiculous on these facebook community sale pages - used diaper pail, etc.
@kiddie , That’s funny - we BOUGHT a diaper pail on FB marketplace! My daughter likes a fancy brand that’s expensive.
A couple of months ago a local young Mom was selling something that I wanted but I couldn’t pick it up so my daughter got it for me. It was for her child anyway. The next day my daughter bought something and after paying for it, realized it was the same person I had bought from the day before, so I picked it up for her. I like the porch pick ups where you can pay for an item and then just pick it up from the house when it works for you.
I think it’s great when these items find new homes and stay out of a landfill or the incinerator a little longer.
@kiddie those are hard to sell no matter where you list them. I volunteer at a charity thrift store and we can’t give these away…for any price. Well…unless they are Limoges, or sterling silver.
