Does anyone know about checking in to places on Facebook?
I have recently been added to the administrator list on my work’s FB page. It is a fitness business. Two people checked in today as being there who weren’t. It is a small business and we don’t see many clients on Saturdays. Just wondering why someone would check into a place they haven’t been to.
It isn’t a big deal -just curious if there is something I don’t know
I’m sure they just did it to show that they were working out… even though they weren’t.
Just a way to seem like they’re healthier and more productive than they actually are.
Thanks. I was a little worried there some something sinister going on.
They could have been outside of the building? So there…but not there!
I wondered about that -but it has its own parking lot. So you wouldn’t walk by or anything.
It’s also possible they were at a nearby business. There are times when I go to check in and click on the wrong place that pops up. Facebook uses the locating feature on the phone and I have had several options pop up. Many times the number one option being wrong.
I’m checking in at a marathon tomorrow. (LOL)
Thanks everyone

Another person checked in. Their profiles are new and full of sexy pics. From what I can tell looking at a FB help discussion board -they are probably prostitutes or fake prostitutes trolling for victims . They check into lots of businesses that sound cool -coffee shops, yoga studios etc… to get more exposure I guess -hoping someone will bite. It is really weird
I understand I can report it to FB as a Fake profile and they may or may not do anything about it.
I check in on Facebook frequently and yes, LOTS of options pop up. There’s nothing to worry about.
If you are on FB, can you choose not to show where you are? I am not on it and am weighing whether I want to or not. I don’t have location tracker on my phone and I feel it’s nobody’s business where I am.
Yes, you don’t have to include your location. Most times you actually have to make an effort (click here, click there) to INCLUDE your location.
@techmom99 - what people are talking about here is a very deliberate choice to show where you are. It’s a way of sharing…like “I’m at my favorite restaurant such and such”. “I’m at the movies watching…”, “I’m at Disneyland”. You only do this if you want to.
There is an indirect way of sharing where you are that is an option you can turn on/off. These happen when you say anything “I’m having a good day” but shows that you posted that from a particular town. Again, you can turn that off.
I just clicked on “Check in” on my phone from home. 15 options popped up. The first was the name of the company my husband and I run out of our house. The farthest one was an apple orchard 8.8 miles away.
I think I have “checked in” all of maybe a dozen times in the 10 years I’ve been on Facebook.
It is completely voluntary.
One thing the discussion I read suggested was to go into the page settings and make it where only people in America can see the Facebook page. Evidently the makers of the fake FB profiles aren’t usually even in your area. I will see if that makes a difference. I am not really worried about it. It just seems so strange.
I just posted a picture from 20 years ago and put the location of where it had been taken. Then I got a notification that I checked in there and did I want to write a review. I did not really mean to check in, was just noting where I was at that time. It is not near me. I typed it in.
Using Facebook to tell people where you are is like saying, “I’m not home. Please rob my house.” I would never do it.
